Opal Howard
MORGANTON — Opal Lawing Carter Howard, age 81, died Tuesday, November 27, 2012. A funeral service will be held Thursday, at 2 p.m. at Harmony Grove Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. at the church. Memorials may be sent to Harmony Grove Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, C/O Ray Watson, 695 Watson Road, Nebo, NC 28761. Westmoreland Funeral Home is assisting the family.
 
Cecil Carson “Bill” Moore
Cecil Carson “Bill” Moore, age 85, of Rutherfordton, died Wednesday, November 28, 2012, at White Oak Manor. 
Born to the late Richard Carson and Hazel Hoyle Moore, he was a native of Rutherford County. Bill was the former maintenance supervisor for Rutherford County Schools for over 40 years. He was a member of Adaville Baptist Church and served four years on the Rutherford County Board of Education. Bill was a US Navy veteran of WWII.
Bill is survived by his wife of 66 years, Grace Sisk Moore of the home; daughter Brenda Rinehart of Rutherfordton; two sons, David Carson Moore and wife, Janet of Forest City and Eddie Ray Moore and wife, Betty of Rutherfordton; three sisters, Ann Wilson of Lake Lure, Joyce Price of Lake Lure, Pat Weaver of Moore, SC; three brothers, Rev. Robert Moore of Sylva, Melvin Moore of Siler City, and Ronnie Moore of Forest City; eight grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Friday, November 30, at Crowe’s Mortuary with Rev. Robert Moore officiating. Interment will follow in Eternal Hills Memorial Park with Military Honors provided by the Rutherford County Honor Guard. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the mortuary.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Rutherford County, the Joe Rinehart Scholarship Fund or Spindale Church of the Brethren, PO Box 8143, Spindale, NC 28160.

Pansy Ivenell Shehan Owensby
Pansy Ivenell Shehan Owensby, age 79, of Spindale, NC, died Tuesday, November 27, 2012, at Hospice House.
Pansy was born, April 2, 1933, in Cleveland County to the late Ivey Shehan and Bernice Huntley Shehan. She was a 1951 graduate of Bethlehem High School in Kings Mountain and was a wonderful homemaker. She was a member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church and enjoyed attending gospel singings, spending time with her fammily, cooking, gardening and working with flowers. She had a joyful spirit and enjoyed good humor.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband of 37 years, Henry Black and her second husband of 16 years, Paul Owensby; two daughters, Kim Glossand and Beth Roberts; two brothers, Raleigh Shehan and Steven Shehan; and one grandchild, Brian Black, Jr.
She is survived by her five sons, James Black and wife, Susan of Mill Spring, Brian Black of Spindale, Reverend Danny Black of Rutherfordton, Jerry Black and wife, Beth of Ellenboro, Donald Black of Spindale; one daughter, Bernice Greene and husband, Jimmy of Spartanburg; one brother, Arnold Shehan and wife, Hazel of Forest City; 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; four nieces and one nephew, Gene Shehan of Rutherfordton.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. at Cherry Mountain Baptist Church on Thursday, November 29, with Rev. Danny Black and Rev. Jimmy Ramsey officiating. Interment will follow in Holly Springs Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Harrelson Funeral Home, 1251 US Highway 221A, Forest City, NC 28043 to help defray funeral costs.

Edward Hicks Ward
Edward Hicks Ward, of the Oakland Community, died Tuesday, November 27, 2012. 
Hicks was retired from Burlington Industries, and an active member of Adaville Baptist Church.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Dorothy “Dot” Cook Ward and his three children, Cathy Therrell and her husband, Charles, Steve Ward and his wife, Carol and Jean Fletcher and husband, Robert; grandchildren, Ben Fletcher, Emily Byers and husband, Scott, John Ward, Eleanor Ferrier and husband, Andrew, Jill Beaver and husband, Brent, Betsy Friedrich and husband, Stephen; sister, Hazel Harris. He also leaves behind his dog Trooper. Hicks was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother.
Mr. Ward will lie in state from 10 -11 a.m. Thursday with services to follow at 11 a.m. at Adaville Baptist Church with Rev. Cal Sayles officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service.

Ann Arrowood Simmons
Ann Arrowood Simmons, age 73, of Ellenboro, NC, died Tuesday, November 27, 2012, at Hospice House.
Ann was born, March 7, 1939, in Rutherford County to the late John Wesley Arrowood and Bazzie Hardin Arrowood. She was a loving mother who greatly enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed spending time gardening and reading.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Bud Hardin, Wesley Arrowood and Donald Arrowood.
She is survived by her husband, Marshall E. Simmons and five sons, Steve K. Roper and wife, Lisa and Sean P. Roper of Forest City, Donald S. Roper and wife, Trena of Boiling Springs, SC, Gary S. Roper and wife, Melinda and Greg D. Roper, all of Rutherfordton; two brothers, Ronald Arrowood of Henrietta and Norman Arrowood of Ruth; one sister, Shirley Bates of Gaffney, SC; and nine grandchildren.  
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. at Harrelson Funeral Home on Friday, November 30 with Reverend Neil Haynes officiating. Interment will follow in the Oak Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
