Barbara Owens
FOREST CITY — Barbara Ann Evans Owens, 57, died Friday, May 3, 2013. A celebration of Barbara’s life was held at 4 p.m. on Monday, at Caroleen Congregational Holiness Church with Rev. Paul Nelon and Rev. Steven Matheny officiating. The Family received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday in the Caroleen Cogreational Holiness Church Sanctuary. Crowe's Mortuary and Crematory assisted the family.
 
Jimmy Andrews Jr.
James Milton "Jimmy" Andrews Jr., 72, of Andrews Mill Road, Bostic, died Monday, May 6, 2013. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, at Salem United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:30 until 8:30 p.m., Wednesday at Washburn & Dorsey Funeral and Cremation Service. Memorials may be made to the Washburn Community Outreach Center, 2934 Piney Mountain Church Road, Bostic, NC 28018. Washburn and Dorsey Funeral Home is serving the family.
 
Donald Raymond Bailey
Donald Raymond Bailey, age  74, died, May 6, 2013, at his residence. 
A native of Rutherford County, he was a son of the late, Richard Harland Bailey and Gladys Hawkins Bailey, a retired truck driver with Carolina Freight, and veteran, having served in the US Army. 
He was preceded in death by a sister, Libby Sherman.
Survivors include a son, Donald Allen Smathers and wife, Allison of Forest City; a brother, Sidney Bailey and wife, Gail of Forest City; a step daughter, Lamonda Henderson and her husband, Larry of Forest City; a former wife, Gail Smathers of Ellenboro; a granddaughter, Aleya Smathers; and one step granddaughter, Madison McCraw.
Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock in the afternoon, Thursday, May 9, 2013, at The Padgett and King Chapel, with the Reverend Rick Brewer officiating. Visitation will be from 1 until 2 prior to the service. Interment will follow in the Eternal Hills Memorial Park.

Betty Jane Bell Dowdle
Betty Jane Bell Dowdle, age 77, of Rutherfordton, died Tuesday, May 7, 2013, at her home while being cared for by Hospice. 
A native of Rutherford County, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Nancy Radford Bell. Betty was a retired supply clerk for National Textiles and a member of Thermal City United Methodist Church.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Lester Earl Dowdle of the home; daughter, Robin Parton of Rutherfordton; sons Roger Bell of Texas and Ken Dowdle of Rutherfordton; three grandchildren; six great grandchildren; sister, Tinsey Conner of Union Mills. 
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Jason Dowdle; sisters, Ellen Simpson and Mildred Flack; brother, James Bell.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m., Thursday, May 9, at Crowe’s Mortuary with Rev. Don Crawford and Rev. Allen Marsh officiating. Interment will follow in Round Hill Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the mortuary.

Marvin Bernard McDaniel
SHELBY, NC — Marvin Bernard McDaniel, 88, of 804 Hampton Street, Shelby, NC, died on Monday, May 6, 2013, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born and educated in Rutherford County, he was the son of the late Dewey and Minnie McDaniel. He graduated from Cliffside High School and Howard Business College. During WWII, Marvin served proudly in the US Army in Europe. Later he worked faithfully for Lithium Corporation of America for over 35 years before retiring to care for his beloved wife, Martha. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Shelby.
In addition to his parents, Marvin was predeceased by his loving wife, Martha Hardin McDaniel, his sister, Ruby McDaniel White, and his grandson, Clark McDaniel.
He is survived by his sister, Edith McDaniel Humphries; his three sons, Mike McDaniel and Kim, Chris McDaniel and Debi, and Mark McDaniel, and Shellie Hamrick.  
Marvin loved and enjoyed each of his seven surviving grandchildren, Taylor McDaniel Wickline  and Matt, Bradey McDaniel Scott  and Damon, Michael McDaniel, Jr., Wesley McDaniel, Morgan McDaniel, Emily McDaniel, and Maggie McDaniel. Also surviving are six very special great grandchildren, Marin and Brighton Wickline, Lilliana and Cruz Scott, and Clarklynn and Mason McDaniel; and several nieces and nephews. Marvin is also survived by a very special companion and long-time friend, Vera Gamble of Charlotte.
The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m., at the chapel of Cecil Burton Funeral Home with the Rev. Glenn Davenport officiating. The family will receive friends tonight, Wednesday, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home and at other times at the homes of Mike and Kim McDaniel, 1807 Arbor Way Drive, and Chris and Debi McDaniel, 1800 Arbor Way Drive.
Memorials may be made to Relay for Life of Cleveland County through the American Cancer Society, 1701 Brunswick Avenue, Charlotte, NC 28207.

George Rom Walker, Jr.
George Rom Walker, Jr., of Rutherfordton, NC, died Sunday, May 5, 2013, at home.
George's love of broadcasting started when he worked at WBBO in Forest City, NC. He was later a reporter, producer and news director in the Greenville/Spartanburg, SC viewing area. Most recently, he worked for WV Public Radio and did voice work for clients in Charleston, Nashville and Chicago as Walker Productions.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George Romulus Walker, Sr. and Mattie Long Walker; brother, Robert Alton Lail; and special aunts and uncles.
He is survived by his nephew, Don Lail; his great nephews, MIchael, Robert and Jason, and numerous cousins. He will be fondly remembered by Michelle, his former wife, as well as loving friends and colleagues.
A memorial service will be held in Charleston at a later date. Barlow and  Bonsall are handling further details. Interment of George's ashes will follow at Mt. Hebron United Methodist Church in Forest City, NC.
