Mrs. Ward was born in Washington, NC, on October 17, 1912, the first of six children of Harvey and Irma Clark Carpenter. At age 6, she moved with her family to Rutherfordton, where she put down her deepest family roots.
She was a 1931 graduate of RS Central High School and a 1935 graduate of Appalachian State Teachers College. She began her first teaching job at Ellenboro Elementary School. In 1936 she took her fourth-grade students to see President Franklin Roosevelt pass by.
In 1937, she married her sweetheart, Armand Ward, from Savannah, Ga. After several moves during Mr. Ward's Naval service, the family returned to Rutherfordton and Mrs. Ward taught first grade at Ruth School until 1953.
The family's next move was to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba where Mr. Ward was a Naval corpsman and later a Civil Service employee. Mrs. Ward taught first grade on the Naval Base and being an innovative and creative teacher, received several Outstanding Teacher awards from the US Government.
Mrs. Ward was caring and compassionate. During her time in Cuba, she gave shelter to people in need during hurricanes, brought home children needing places to stay, invited servicemen home for dinner, and often helped Cuban people fleeing the Communist Regime.
In 1967 her husband retired and they left Cuba and returned to Rutherfordton. They bought the home that Mrs. Ward's great-grandfather, Harvey Dewey Carrier, had built for his daughter after the Civil War. Mrs. Ward then taught at Oakland Elementary until her retirement in the 1970's. After her retirement, she and her husband spent many of the next 15 years traveling and at their Lake Lure home or in their RV in Florida.
Mrs. Ward loved her church and her home at 415 N. Main St. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. One of her greatest loves was teaching children to read and before her retirement, she taught her first grandson to read.
Mrs. Ward was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Armand Ward; brother, Jonathan Harvey Carpenter, Jr.; sisters, Margaret Whiteside Martin, and Irma Carpenter Jackson; and her son-in-law, Tim Gordon.
