D.G. Godfrey, age 72, of Forest City, NC, died Monday, February 11, 2013, at the Charles George VA Medical Center.
D. G. was born November 13, 1940, in Rutherford County, NC to the late Claude Godfrey and Aby Collins Godfrey. He was a veteran of the US Army and worked for over 30 years in the Maintenance Department for the Rutherford County Public Schools. He was a member of the Cliffside Masonic Lodge #460 and a 32nd degree Mason. He was a member of the Oasis Shrine and Cliffside Eastern Star Chapter #100. D. G. also was a faithful member of Riverside Baptist Church. He enjoyed going to flea markets and was an avid fisherman.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Gaston David Godfrey and one sister, Janice Godfrey Crook.
Survivors include his loving wife of 48 years, Hazel Godfrey; four sons, Billy Gragg and wife, Mary Ellen of Warner Robbins, Georgia, Robert Gragg and wife, Nell of Forest City, Mark Gragg and wife, Pam of Ellenboro and Frank Godfrey of Forest City; one daughter, Angela Schronce and husband, Keith of Claremont, NC; two sisters, Shirley Guest and husband, Carol of Forest City and Sudie Joy of Florence, SC; one brother, Joe Godfrey and wife, Faye of Gilkey, NC. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren, Michael, Rachel and Tyler Gragg, Michael Ruff, Nichole and Rodney Gragg, Shayana Lail, David Ridings, Jason Selph, Nathan and Daniel Schronce; ten great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Thursday, February 14, 2013, at Floyd’s Creek Baptist Church with Reverend Ted Blankenship officiating. Interment will follow in Rutherford County Memorial Cemetery with Masonic Rites being accorded by the Cliffside Masonic Lodge #460 and Military Honors being accorded by the Rutherford County Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Manning Brooks Mahaffee, Sr.
Manning Brooks Mahaffee, Sr., age 69, of Soddy Daisy, Tennessee, passed away Saturday, February 9, 2013, at the Fairview Park Hospital in Dublin, Georgia.
Manning was born January 10, 1944, in Charlotte, NC to the late James S. Mahaffee, Sr. and Elizabeth Small Mahaffee. Manning served in the US Army from 1966 – 68 and was awarded the Bronze Star for his service in the Vietnam War. He worked as a dispatcher and retired from CSX Transportation in Jacksonville, Florida.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Ann Mahaffee and a brother, James S. Mahaffee, Jr.
Survivors include his son, Manning Brooks Mahaffee, Jr, of Carrabelle, FL..; one daughter, Kristi M. Weeks and husband, Chris of Helena, Georgia; one sister, Francis M. Black and one brother, Charles R. Mahaffee. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Lyndsey Mahaffee, Colin Weeks, Kayla Weeks and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be conducted at noon on Thursday, February 14, 2013, at the Caroleen-Avondale-Henrietta Cemetery with Reverend David Hawkins officiating. Military honors will be accorded by the Rutherford County Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 11 until 11:45 a.m. at the funeral home prior to the service at the cemetery.

Bernice Elliott Whiteside
RUTHERFORDTON, NC — In loving memory of Bernice Elliott Whiteside, age 81, of Cove Creek Drive, who went home to be with the Lord on Monday February 11, 2013, while being cared for at Hospice House of Forest City.
A native of McDowell County, she was a homemaker and member of Rock Springs Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Rucker and Maude Murphy Elliott as well as her husband, Hugh Whiteside.
Left to cherish her memories are her children, Judy Whiteside Monday and husband, Bedford, Sara Whiteside Roddy and husband, Keith, Billy Whiteside and wife, Michelle, Bobby Whiteside and wife, Deana, Linda Whiteside Hamrick and husband, Kevin; foster son, Clayton Turner and wife, Gay; sister, Margie Davis; 14 grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.
A celebration of her life will be held 2 p.m., Wednesday, February 13, 2013, at Rock Springs Baptist Church, 111 Polk County Line Road, Rutherfordton, NC, with Rev. Ed Foshie officiating. Concluding services will be held in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 until 1:45 p.m., in the church fellowship hall.

Rupert “Shorty” Johnson Sr
Rupert “Shorty” Johnson Sr, 77, of Bostic, died Tuesday, February 12, 2013, at Hospice House.
A native of Rutherford County, he was the son of the late Henry and Mary Hudson Johnson. Shorty was retired from the Spindale Police Force with 27 years service, 23 years with the Spindale Fire Department and was a US Navy veteran.
Shorty is survived by one son, Rupert Johnson, Jr. and wife, Kim of Bostic; two daughters, Pat Easton and husband, Cary of Caroleen and Debra Langley and husband, Dewayne of Golden Valley; four grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, February 14, at Crowe’s Mortuary with John Horne officiating. Interment will follow in the Sandy Level Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the mortuary.

Louise Taylor Arrowood
Louise Taylor Arrowood, age 90, of Rutherfordton, NC, died Monday, February 11, 2013, at Rutherford Regional Medical Center.
She was a native of Rutherford County and the daughter of the late George Ben and Mary Taylor. Louise was of the Baptist faith and was a homemaker. She was the widow of Reid Arrowood and was preceded in death by a son Sammy Arrowood.
She is survived by five daughters, Linda Hardin of Rutherfordton, Pat Parker of Rutherfordton, Barbara Shires of Ellenboro, Regina Arrowood of Hickory, Judy Nodine of Rutherfordton; three sons, James Arrowood of Rutherfordton, Robert Arrowood of Rutherfordton, Dale Arrowood of Rutherfordton; 14 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, February 13, 2013, at McMahan's Funeral Home. The funeral service will be at McMahan's Funeral Home Chapel at 3 p.m., Thursday, February 14, 2013, with Rev. Kelly Luckadoo, Rev. Ed Rogers and Rev. Terry White officiating. Burial will be in the Southern Baptist Church Cemetery.
