Jean Anders Vickers
RUTHERFORDTON — Jean Anders Vickers, age 71, died Wednesday, January 30, 2013. A memorial service will be conducted at 7 p.m. on Monday, at the Harrelson Funeral Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service time at the funeral home. Inurnment will take place at Southern Baptist Church Cemetery on a later date. Memorial donations are suggested to Hospice of Rutherford County, PO Box 336, Forest City, NC  28043. Harrelson Funeral Home is caring for the family of Mrs. Vickers.
 
Imedelle W. Matheny
FOREST CITY — Imedelle W. Matheny, age 94, died Thursday, January 31, 2013. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by The Padgett and King Mortuary.

ELLENBORO – W.C. Dycus, 63, died on Monday, January 28, 2013. A celebration of life service will be held at 12 p.m. on Saturday, at the A.C. McKinney Memorial Chapel. A private burial will be held at a later date. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until 12 p.m. at McKinney-Landreth & Carroll Funeral and Cremation Service. Samuel Humphries
SHELBY — Samuel Humphries, age 76, died Sunday, January 27, 2013. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Thompson's Mortuary and Chapel, Inc. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service. Thompson's Mortuary and Chapel, Inc. is serving the family.
 
 
Ruth Thornton Carver
Ruth Carver, 95, of Fuquay Varina, formerly of Spindale, died Tuesday, January 29, 2013, at her son’s home. 
A native of Rutherford County, Ruth was the daughter of the late Claude C. and Margaret McAllister Thornton. She was a home maker and a member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church. Ruth was active in the church, the Democratic Party, American Legion Auxiliary, and Rutherford Hospital Auxiliary for over thirty years.
Ruth is survived by her daughter Kaye Carver of Charlotte; son, Wayne Carver of Fuquay Varina; sister Grace Pritchard of Vero Beach, FL; 10 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren. 
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert M. Carver, son Marion Carver, and five brothers.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, February 2, at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church with Rev. Ronald Setzer officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service.

Bob B. McFarland
Bob Baynard McFarland, professor emeritus of curriculum and instruction at Appalachian State University, age 81, of Chapel Hill, died January 30, 2013 at Duke Hospice at the Meadowlands in Hillsborough after a long illness.
Born May 10, 1931, in Alexander Mills, he was the son of the late Arthur Leslie and Hattie Alice Baynard McFarland and a 1949 graduate of Cool Springs High School in Forest City. He earned a B.S. degree in English and physical education from Appalachian State Teachers College in 1952. He entered the U.S. Army, serving with the 101st Airborne Infantry and the 93rd Signal Corps during the Korean Conflict.
McFarland received his M.A. degree in English and secondary education in 1958 from Appalachian and completed additional graduate work at Indiana University. He taught at Frank Ashley High School in Gastonia before joining the Appalachian faculty in 1961. He retired in 1993 after teaching for 31 years. McFarland was the last retiring Appalachian professor to have either studied with or served with the University’s first four presidents and chancellors.
McFarland was a long-time member of the First Presbyterian Church in Boone, where he was a deacon, elder and Sunday School teacher.
He was an avid UNC Tar Heel fan and proud member of the Educational Foundation, Inc. He loved flowers and Big Band music. He was an excellent photographer, a crossword puzzle whiz and, in his younger days, enjoyed golf. He achieved the rare feat of a hole in one.
Survivors include his son, Michael McFarland, and his wife, Jennifer, of Chapel Hill; his daughter, Jill Cook and her husband, Glenn, of Lorton, VA; grandchildren Elisabeth and Margaret McFarland of Chapel Hill, Katharine, Emma and Benjamin Cook of Lorton, Va., and Nicholas Cook of Greensboro; brother-in-law, Harold Mercer of Laurinburg; nephews John Mercer and his wife, Marilyn, of Winston-Salem; Scott Mercer and his wife, Le Ann of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and niece, Alyce Mercer of High Point; as well as several other nieces, nephews, their spouses and children. His sister was the late Sybil Mercer of Laurinburg. He was the former husband of 44 years to the late Betty Ruth Hodges McFarland of Greensboro.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, February 9, at First Presbyterian Church in Boone at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Gerald Hodges, Bob’s nephew, officiating. A graveside service will follow at Duncan’s Creek Presbyterian Church cemetery near Ellenboro at 4 p.m. The family will receive friends informally after those services.

Lennie Atchley Jones
Mrs. Lennie Atchley Jones, 83, of Forest City, died Wednesday, January 30, 2013, at Hospice House, Forest City.
She was the daughter of the late Robert and Pannie Atchley, and was also preceded in death by a brother, Glenn Atchley; and a sister, Mary Kimbrell. 
She was a member of Walls Baptist Church where she was a Sunday School Teacher, a GA Leader, WMU Director, and served on several committees.
She is survived by her husband, Henry “Ted” Jones Sr; her son, Henry Jones Jr. and his wife, Cynthia, of Ellenboro; two daughters, Judy Jones of Forest City and Sherry Bradley of Spindale; two sisters, Geneva Wilson of Forest City, and Johnnie Sue Conner of Spindale; two brothers, Ray Atchley of Winston-Salem, and Charles Atchley of Bostic. There are five grandchildren, Crissy Wilson, Tara Palmer, Lee Jones, Donald Bradley, and Chad Bradley; and five great grandchildren, Hayden Wilson, Chase Wilson, Alexis Smolley, Gavin Palmer, and Alea Bradley.
The Funeral will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, February 2, 2013, at Walls Baptist Church. Rev. David Philbeck and Rev. Cecil Ballard will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Rev. Perry Jones officiating.
The Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m., Friday at Washburn & Dorsey Funeral and Cremation Service.

Daniel Ray "Dan" McGinnis
ELLENBORO — Daniel Ray "Dan" McGinnis, age 56, of Pinehurst Road, Ellenboro, died Wednesday, January 30, 2013, at his residence.  
Dan was born April 9, 1956, on the US Air Force Base in Mobile, Alabama and was a lifelong resident of Rutherford County. He was a faithful member of Forest City Foursquare Church where he was active in the Food Pantry. Dan was also known as the "Horse Man" by the children in the Strength of His Hands Ministry, a camp for the deaf and worked at Forest City Honda as an auto service technician.
Survivors include his wife, Sharon Sanders McGinnis of the home; four sons, Clint McGinnis and wife Angel of Forest City, Andy McGinnis and wife Star of Ellenboro, Paul McGinnis and Ethan McGinnis both of Ellenboro; a daughter, Leann McGinnis Coffey of Ellenboro; his mother, Kay McGinnis Watts and step-father, Theron of Ellenboro; his father, Kenneth Ray McGinnis and step-mother Barbara of Bostic; two brothers, David McGinnis of Forest City and Doug McGinnis of Cliffside; nine grandchildren, Caleb McGinnis, Bethany Coffey, Bryson McGinnis, Jackson McGinnis, Bailey McGinnis, Lydia Coffey, Carter McGinnis, Zeke McGinnis, and Chase McGinnis.
Funeral services will be held at two o'clock Saturday, February 2, 2013, in the Forest City Foursquare Church with Reverend Ricky Poteat, Reverend Sam Henderson, and Reverend Angel West officiating.  Interment will follow in the Corinth Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be from six until eight o'clock Friday evening at The Forest City Foursquare Church.
