Johnny Alan Warren
LAKE LURE — Johnny Alan Warren, age 52, of Lake Lure, died Sunday, May 12, 2013. A memorial service will be at 4 p.m., Saturday, at 161 Yonders Way, Lake Lure, NC. Military Honors will be provided by the Rutherford County Honor Guard. Crowe's Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements.
 
Dianne Ferguson
FOREST CITY — Dianne Guffey Ferguson, age 65, died on May 12, 2013. A memorial will be held 2 p.m., Wednesday, at Emmanuel Baptist Church, 3000 Stone Station Rd. Roebuck, SC 29376.
 
Enola Lynch
UNION MILLS — Enola Melveena Lynch, age 89, died Thursday, May 9, 2013. The funeral will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Mt. Pleasant CME Church in Union Mills. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service. Thompson's Mortuary, Inc. is assisting the family.

FOREST CITY — Kim Bright, age 43, died Monday, May 13, 2013. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 17, 2013, at Crestview Baptist Church. Betty Jean Pritchard Owens
Betty Jean Pritchard Owens, age 58, of Ellenboro, NC, died Sunday, May 12, 2013, at the Hospice House of Rutherford County.  
Betty was born December 22, 1954, in Polk County, NC, to the late Andrew Pritchard and Mary Sue McDaniel Pritchard. She worked for the Vocational Workshop for many years and was a member of the Church of the Exceptional where she enjoyed singing in the choir. Besides singing, she also loved listening to Southern Gospel Music.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Joseph Owens and one sister, Helen Jeanette Pritchard.
Survivors include her brother, Larry Pritchard of Ellenboro; four aunts, Sarah Dolan Weatherman of Ellenboro, Edna Wishion of Spindale, Lottie Craig of Swannanoa, NC, Annie Belle Blackwell of Asheville; two uncles, Wayne Craig of Virginia and Carl MCDaniel of Fairhaven Nursing Home; and many nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be conducted at noon on Wednesday, May 15, 2013, at the Eternal Hills Cemetery with Reverend Neil Murray and Reverend Mattie Lackey officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:30 until 11:30 a.m. at the funeral home on the day of the service.

Steve Smith
Steve Smith, age 73, of Caroleen, NC, died Sunday, May 12, 2013, at the Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
Steve was born August 13, 1939, in Rutherford County, NC, to the late Charlie D. Smith and Ada Hollifield Smith. He was an auto mechanic and owned and operated the Caroleen Garage for over 40 years. He was a Baptist and enjoyed NASCAR. 
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Mildred Connor; two brothers, Homer Smith, Carl Smith and one grandson, Noah Cooper.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Vanise Lookadoo Smith; three children, Sandra Smith of Rutherfordton, Scott Smith of Caroleen and Suzanne Hensley and husband, Robert of Mooresboro; five grandchildren, Amanda Cooper and husband, Steven, Allen Phillips, Rebekah Hensley, Austin Hensley, Haley Hensley; and five great-grandchildren, Caleb Cope, Emily Cooper, Miley Cooper, Coby Phillips and Legand Phillips.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, May 15, 2013, at Goode’s Grove Baptist Church with Reverend Robert Hensley, Reverend Frank Hoyle and Reverend Steven Cooper officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Donna Morrow Roach 
Donna Morrow Roach, age 62, of Ellenboro, NC, died Sunday, May 12, 2013, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
Donna was born January 3, 1951, in Rutherford County, NC, to the late Elmer Buddy Morrow and Laura Warlick Morrow. Donna was a graduate of East High School, class of 1969. She worked for OMC Industries and for J.C. Cowan for many years and was also a private duty caretaker for several years. She was a member of Alexander Baptist Church and enjoyed cleaning, cooking, bargain shopping, camping and especially spending time with family and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters, Charles Morrow, Irene Splawn, Ruth Moore, Betty Bostic, Jack Morrow, Joe Morrow, Rosie Bridges, Martha McDaniel and Jerry Morrow.
Survivors include her daughter, Leslie Roach of Ellenboro; and one son, Scott Roach of Forest City; three sisters, Becky Tipton and husband, Tom, Linda Vallecillo all of Forest City and Susie Dycus of Harris; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at noon on Thursday, May 16, 2013, at the Harrelson Funeral Chapel with Reverend Eddie Bolin officiating. Interment will follow in Alexander Mills Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service time at the funeral home.

James Wilson Miser
James Wilson Miser, age 89, of Forest City, NC, died Thursday, May 9, 2013, at the Hospice House of Rutherford County.
James was born May 5, 1924, at Blue Island, Illinois to the late Wilson Lee Miser and Nellie Pyle Miser. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Richard Andrews Miser and two brothers, Hugh Miser and John Miser.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Garvin Miser; two daughters, Ruth Miser Courtade and Mark, Alice Miser Schellenberger and William; one son James Wilson Miser, Jr.  and Laura; one sister, Mary Hamilton and daughter in-law, Nancy Badje Miser. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, Jeffrey Miser and Alyson, Heather Miser Saunders and Jason, Bradley Miser, Brendon Courtade and Kristin, Carolyn Courtade Buck  and Daniel, Stephen Courtade, Kevin Courtade, Lindsay Miser, Jaimie Miser and Sarah Miser; nine great granchildren, Adriana Miser, Camille Miser, Lauralei Saunders, Logan Saunders, Noelle Saunders, Conor Courtade, Logan Courtade, Jesse Courtade, Micah Buck and Baby Courtade due in the fall.
The Miser Family moved to Nashville, Tennessee where he was educated in the public schools. Jim’s interest in music started at an early age and continued throughout his life. During high school, he played trombone in the marching band and sang in the choir. He then graduated from Peabody Demonstration School. He first attended Seagle Music Colony in Schroon, N.Y. in the summer before entering Ashland College for his freshman year. He joined the Air Force in 1943 and served for three years.
Jim enrolled in Vanderbilt University for Mechanical Engineering and graduated in 1949. He was a member of Tau Beta Pi honorary engineering society. Jim married Carolyn Jean Garvin on August 29, 1947 and worked for General Electric, General Motors and NASA at the Lewis Lab in Cleveland, Ohio during the research for the lunar landing. Jim continued his love of music, singing in choral groups as a soloist, returning to Seagle Music Colony several times and as choir director for church adult and children’s choirs.
After retirement from NASA in 1979, he and his family moved to the Chase Community. He continued to volunteer, joining the chorus at ICC and as a member of the Avondale United Methodist Church, where he served as a lay leader and treasurer. Jim was also on the Board of the Chase Corner Ministries and member of the Lucille Wall Music Club. Jim loved to travel to various parts of the US to attend family gatherings and Miser reunions.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 18, 2013, at the Avondale United Methodist Church with Reverend Robert Hodgens, Reverend Roy Byers and Reverend Mike Gordon officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1:45 p.m. on Saturday in the church fellowship hall. There will be a family meal following the service at the church. A musical Celebration of Life service will be conducted on August 24, 2013 at 3 p.m. in the sanctuary of the Berea United Methodist Church in Berea, Ohio. His ashes will be placed in the Memorial Garden Repository. A reception will follow in the Gathering Room of the church.

Bob Shepard
Mr. Bob Shepard, 81, of Bostic Sunshine Hwy, Sunshine, died Monday, May 13, 2013 at Willow Ridge Nursing Center. 
He was the son of the late Willie and Irene Hastings Shepard. Bob was a Korean War Veteran and a member of First Broad Baptist Church. He retired from WNC Florist and was a member of the Hollis Masonic Lodge. 
He is survived by his wife Sudie Mae Jenkins Shepard; two daughters, Joy Baldwin and her husband Dwayne, of Forest City, and Renae Karriker and her husband John, of Statesville; four sisters, Betty Bell of Kings Mountain, Phyllis Shepard of Sunshine, Ellen Hudson and Gail Yelton, both of Golden Valley;  a brother, James Shepard of Sweetwater,TN: there are five grandchildren, Holly M. Sutton and her husband Mitchell, Ashley K.Latva and her husband Norman, Heather M. Munn and her husband Mickey, Danielle M. Greene and her husband SSGT Jonathan Greene, and Evan Karriker; there are four great grandchildren, Dylan Sutton, Madilyn Murray, Bailey Greene, and Sophie Greene. 
Military Rites will be at 2:45 pm Thursday, May 16, 2013 on the grounds of Washburn & Dorsey Funeral and Cremation Service and rendered by the Rutherford County Honor Guard. 
A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 pm Thursday at Washburn & Dorsey, following the conclusion of the Military Rites. Rev. Robert Bradley will officiate. 
A Visitation will be held following the chapel service until 5:00 pm.

Rachel Walker Lail
Rachel Walker Lail, 72, of Shelby, passed away on Monday, May 13, 2013. 
The funeral service will be held at 11 o'clock in the morning on Thursday, May 16, 2013, at Sandy Plains Baptist Church. Pastor Jerry Lail will officiate. Visitation will be held one hour before the funeral, with burial following. Arrangements will be handled by Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home and Crematory. 
Rachel was born in Shelby on August 5, 1940, to Lawson Elmo and Almera Price Walker. She graduated from Polkville High School and then the University of Florida. Rachel worked as a Certified Dietary Manager and Food Protection Professional for Fair Haven Home for 17 years. 
Rachel is survived by Alan and Sandra Lail, Darrell and Morgan Rice, and Shannon Lail of Mount Pleasant, SC; Patti and Melanie Allen of Ellabell, GA; Alan and Rachel Manuszak of Sumter, SC; Lee and Kara Lail and Lindsay Luckadoo of Ellenboro; and other family and friends. 
Rachel was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Nancy Rebecca Walker. 
Rachel loved the Lord and attended Bethel Baptist Church in Shelby. 
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her name to Hospice of Rutherford County, 374 Hudllow Road, Forest CIty, NC 28043.
