RUTHERFORD COUNTY —
RUTHERFORDTON — Margaret Mozelle Guffey Bailey, age 84, died Tuesday, January 15, 2013. A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, at Adaville Baptist Church. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Concluding services will be held in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to Rutherford County Hospice, P.O. Box 336, Forest City, NC 28043. Crowe's Mortuary is assisting the Bailey family.
FOREST CITY — Mary Gene Lindsay, age 78, died Saturday, January 12, 2013. The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Ulysses D. Miller Funeral Service. Ulysses D. Miller Funeral Service is in charge of the arrangements.
Janice Bland King
Janice Bland King, age 67, of Spindale, NC, died Monday, January 14, 2013, at Smith Phayer Hospice House in Landrum, SC.
She was the daughter of the late James and Viola Hodge Bland and native of Rutherford County. She was a member of West Point Baptist Church and attended Four Square Gospel Church of Forest City.
Janice was preceded in death by a son, Jamie Davis.
She is survived by two daughters, Marcie Davis Fortenberry of Campobello, SC and Robin Davis of the home; one son, Sam Davis of Marion, NC; one sister, Karen Bland Salmon of Rutherfordton, NC; one brother, Scott Bland of Rutherfordton, NC; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Wednesday at McMahan's Funeral Home. The funeral service will be at West Point Baptist Church at 1:00 PM, Thursday, January 17, 2013 with Rev. Lance Scarlett and Rev. Ricky Poteat officiating. Interment will be at West Point Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will be at the home of Karen Bland Salmon.

Chris Towery, age 59, of Providence Road, Forest City, NC, died Monday, January 14, 2013, at Autumn Care of Saluda.
Chris was born in Rutherford County, NC, to the late James Fay Towery and Eloise Christy Towery. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War and served in the US Marine Corps. He worked as a general contractor and as a construction superintendent most of his life. He loved deer hunting, NASCAR, horseback riding, four-wheeling, and was an avid Oakland Raiders fan. He was a member of Providence United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Kathy R. Towery; one son, Robert “Dingo” Towery and wife, Tonya of Forest City; one daughter, Christy Coffey and husband, Timmy of Spartanburg County, SC; two brothers, John Wayne Towery and wife, Frances of Tanners Grove Community and Daniel Fay Towery and wife, Dianna of Mill Spring. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Robbie Coffey of Forest City; four grandchildren, Autum Towery, Levi Towery, Jerica Coffey, Lana Coffey and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. on Thursday, January 17, 2013, at the Providence United Methodist Church with Reverend David Bradley officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with military honors being accorded by the Rutherford County Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 7:30 until 9 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorial donations are suggested to the Marine Corps League, PO Box 1293, Forest City, NC 28043.
The family also wishes to urge people to make themselves aware of the disease, Cerebellar Ataxia, and urges them to make donations to any individual with this disease in Chris’ memory.

Charlotte Holderman Ray Derrough
Charlotte Holderman Ray Derrough, age 88, of Asheville, originally of Burnsville, NC, passed away peacefully in her home on January 11, 2013 following a brief bout with cancer.
She was surrounded by her five loving children, Roger Derrough Jr. of Asheville, Julia Rome of Frankfort, KY, Carol Neely of
Rutherfordton, Patricia Derrough of Asheville and David Derrough of Asheville. Others in attendance were Roger Jr.’s wife, Janese and two grandsons, Morgan Neely and Carter Neely, both of Asheville.
Charlotte was a 1946 graduate of Greensboro Women’s College with a bachelor’s degree in Home Economics. She taught one year in Burnsville, NC, before moving to Chicago and becoming a home economist and demonstrator for Admiral Appliances. In the 1950’s she went on a blind date with her husband of 56 years, Roger Asher Derrough, of Champaign, Ill. The couple also lived in Matthews, NC, before settling in Asheville in the early sixties. Charlotte was instrumental in the encouragement of her children and their success in the Natural Food business since 1977, of Earth Fare in Asheville, and Plum Natural Market in Forest City.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Samuel Troy Ray and Winnie Lou Higgins Ray of Burnsville, NC, a brother Ronnie Ray of Washington, DC and her husband of 56 years, Roger Derrough Sr.
Survivors include her sister, Llewellyn Estep of Williamsburg, Va., Steve and Carol Neely of Rutherfordton, and their three sons, Morgan and Carter of Asheville, Hart and his wife, Jennifer and their son, Harper of Cincinnati, OH, Julia’s husband, David Rome and their sons, Justin and Jeremy, of Frankfort, KY, Roger’s daughter, Katie Thiele of New York City, six grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at Central United Methodist Church in Asheville, NC at 2 pm on Sunday, January 20, with Dr. Rob Blackburn officiating. The family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall immediately following the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family request donations to Central United Methodist Church, 27 Church St., Asheville, NC 28801 or the Yancey County History Association’s, Rush Wray Museum, 3 Academy St., Burnsville, NC 28714.
Amos Hammon Philbeck
Amos Hammon Philbeck, age 99, of 446 Textile Dr., Spindale, NC passed away Monday, January 14, 2013, at Rutherford Regional Medical Center.
Hammon was a native of Rutherford County, retired from Stonecutter Mill where he was a weave room supervisor and was a member of Spindale United Methodist Church.
Preceding him in death were his wife, Hazel Philbeck, daughter, Lucille Fincannon and her husband, Bobby, parents, Joe and Mattie Philbeck, and a grandson, David Hammon Fincannon.
Left to cherish his memory is a daughter, Barbara Higgins and her husband, Harlan of Forest City; grandson, John Higgins of Rutherfordton, granddaughters, Christina High and Cathy Parnell both of Nashville, TN; great-grandchildren, Alley, Cole, Charlie, Heather, Bobby Joe, Timmy and Samantha; a number of great-great-grandchildren including two special children, Tamia and Caylee.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11 AM Wednesday, January 16, 2013, at Spindale United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bruce Jones officiating. Burial will be at Eternal Hills. The family will receive friends from 10-11 AM prior to the service.

Annette Wilkerson Marks
Annette Wilkerson Marks, age 71 of Jones Street, Forest City died Saturday, January 12, 2013 at her residence.
She was a native of Rutherford County and a daughter of the late Millard and Lillian Estelle McFarland Wilkerson. Annette was a graduate of Cool Springs High School Class of 1959 and a member of Florence Baptist Church. She was a faithful marine wife and mother, traveling with her late husband, First Sgt. Norman P. Marks, Jr., USMC,(Retired) who died in 2003. Annette worked for many years as a
sales associate for Roses at the Tri-City Mall. Survivors include three daughters, Norma Devine and
husband Darrell of Rutherfordton, Donna Cowell and husband Ed of Hubert, NC, and Susan Johnson and husband Dave of Langley AFB in Virginia. There are also two brothers, Leroy Wilkerson of Panama City, FL, Wiley Wilkerson of Forest City, three sisters, Joyce Owens of Spindale, Donnis Connor of Forest City and Visita Martin and husband Jim of Heath Springs, SC. There are eleven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
The Funeral will be held at two o'clock Friday, January 18, 2013, in the Florence Baptist Church with Reverend Dr. Bobby Gantt officiating. Interment will follow in the Cool Springs Cemetery. Visitation will be held from six until eight o'clock Thursday evening at The Padgett and King Mortuary.

Debbie Lovelace, age 47, of Forest City, NC, died January 7, 2013.
Debbie was born April 4, 1965 in Newport News, Virginia to the late James William Russell and Eleanor Morris Russell, who resides in Richmond, VA. She was a homemaker and enjoyed gardening, cooking, working out and shopping. She was a member of Harris First Baptist Church.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by two sons, Garret Thomas Lovelace of the home and Philip Bradley of Salisbury, NC; one daughter, April Moss and husband, Travis of Wichita, Kansas; three sisters, Gayle Hoskin and husband, Rick, Rita Russell all of Richmond and Carol Horne and husband, Ricky of Spindale, NC; one brother, James Russell of Black Mountain, NC. She is also survived by three grandsons, Braden Moss, Caleb Moss, Nolan Bradley and one granddaughter, Dayscha Bradley.
Memorial services will be conducted at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 16, 2013, at the Harrelson Funeral Chapel with Reverend George Whitmire officiating. The family will receive friends from
3:00 p.m. until service time at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to the Garret Lovelace Fund, 117 Daniel Road, Forest City, NC 28043.
