Robynn Lowe Spence

Robynn Lowe Spence, age 46, of Rutherfordton, the Rutherford County Clerk of Superior Court, died Sunday, February 16, 2014. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Washburn and Dorsey Funeral and Cremation Service. 

 

 

Clifford C. "Tip" Carpenter

Clifford C. "Tip" Carpenter, age 81, of Mount Vernon Community of Forest City, NC, died Monday, February 17, 2014, at Rutherford Regional Medical Center.

Tip was a member of First Baptist Church of Rutherfordton. He was the son of the late Charles & Lucy York Carpenter and a native of Rutherford County. He was a U. S. Army veteran.  He was retired from Bell South Telephone Company after 30 plus years of service. Tip rode and trained American Saddle Bred horses all his life.

He is survived by his wife, Jean T. Carpenter; one daughter, Amy Carpenter Toney; two sons,Mark C. Carpenter and his wife Donna and Scott Carpenter; one brother, Max Carpenter of Lenoir, NC and four grandchildren, Lee Carpenter, Katie Carpenter, Nathan Beason and Rozalyn Toney.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Tuesday at McMahan's Funeral Home. The  Funeral service will be at First Baptist Church of Rutherfordton at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, February 19, 2014 with Rev. Tim Marsh and Rev. Dean Baughn officiating. Arlene McGuinn Lawson

Arlene McGuinn Lawson, 71, formerly of Sunny View, NC, passed away Saturday, February 15, 2014 in the Henderson Care Center, Forest City, NC.

Born in Sunshine, NC, she was the daughter of Marie H. Sain McGuinn of Billings, MT and the late Buford McGuinn. Arlene worked for several years at Hatch Mill, Columbus, NC and later at Absorba in Rutherford County. She was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving along with her mother are: a son, Michael C. Lawson (Lovanda) of Mill Spring, NC; a daughter, Sonja L. Wilson of Mill Spring, NC; three brothers, Robbin McGuinn (Joanne) of Forest City, NC; Randy McGuinn of Columbia, SC and Decatur McGuinn (Brenda) of Sunny View, NC; a sister, Lillian Silvers of Billings, MT. Also surviving are 4 grandchildren David M. Yoak, Chelsea L. Wilson, Elijah Lawson and Piper Lawson and 3 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday February 18, 2014 in the Big Level Baptist Church, Mill Spring, NC with Rev. William Swink and Rev. Robert Orr officiating.

Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Family will receive friends from 1:00 to 1:45 p.m. Tuesday, just prior to the funeral in Big Level Baptist Church.

Truman Robert "Shorty" Farmer

Truman Robert “Shorty” Farmer, 84, of Wood Road, Mooresboro, died on Sunday, February 16, 2014 at his residence. A native of Cleveland County, he was born on September 23, 1929, a son of the late Beeler Farmer Vena Bell Farmer. He was retired from the Hamrick Mills and was a U.S. Army Veteran and served with the Combat Engineers; he was a Korean War Veteran. He was a member of Prospect Baptist Church where he was a Deacon. He loved the outdoors, racing, bluegrass and music.

In addition to his mother, he is preceded in death by two brothers, Garnett Farmer and Dewey Farmer; three sisters, Beatrice Jackson, Vernette Ellis and Cathleen Farmer.  He is survived by his wife, Mae McCraw Farmer; one son, Mickey McCraw of the home; one daughter, Tammy Ruppe of and husband Tim of Gaffney, SC; one brother, Jack Farmer and wife Mildred of Gaffney; one sister, Doris Mills and husband Britton of Gaffney; one granddaughter, Cayci Ruppe of Gaffney.

A Celebration of Mr. Farmer’s Life will be held at 3:00pm on Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at Prospect Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Prospect Baptist Church Cemetery with Military Honors accorded by the U.S. Army. Visitation will be held from 2:00pm-3:00pm in the church sanctuary.

Max Gardner Sisk

Max Gardner Sisk, age 93 of Sisk Road, Bostic, North Carolina died Sunday, February 16, 2014 at his residence.  He was born November 28, 1920 in McDowell County and was a son of the late Robert and Bessie Walker Sisk.  Max worked for Cone Mills Corporation at the Florence Plant where he retired in 1983 with forty years service.  A faithful member of Trinity Wesleyan Church where he had served on the Administrative Board, was former Sunday School Superintendent as well as serving on numerous church committees.  He enjoyed working with Vacation Bible School and for many years provided a Merry-Go-Round and Baseball field at his home for the church children each year. He enjoyed the music at the church and sang in the Trinity Quartet. 

Max was a well known woodworker and enjoyed operating his shop at his home.  He was a true craftsman building and repairing furniture for the public.  He was best known for his grandfather clocks which grace many homes in the county, state,  and  across the country. He was a founding member of the Rutherford County Woodworkers.  Max also served his country in the United States Army during World War II in the Pacific Theater. He was a loving  husband, father, grandfather and friend to many.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Eunice Mise Sisk of the home, two daughters, Jo Ann Shepherd and her husband Doug of Morganton, Carolyn Richardson and her husband Roy of Candler, four grandchildren, Lori Shepherd Clark and husband Brad, Josh Shepherd and wife Jen, Amanda Richardson Deweese and husband Chris and Emily Richardson and fiancé, Jason Hodges as well as great-grandchildren, Kate and Leah Clark and Laney Deweese and his "adoptive son" Doug Lail of Bostic.

Funeral services will be held at two o'clock Wednesday, February 19, 2014 in the Trinity Wesleyan Church with Reverend Larry Segers officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in the Eternal Hills Memorial Park. Visitation will be from five until seven o'clock Tuesday evening at Padgett and King. Marvin Deck Hutchins

Marvin Deck Hutchins, 81, died Saturday. He was the son of the late Curtis and Ina Freeman Hutchins.

He was a graduate of Gardner Webb College in NC, Berea College in Kentucky and received his Masters from the University of Kentucky. He was a poultry science nutritionist.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Leona Dobbins Hutchins; loving children, Kevin Hutchins of Centreville, MD, Grant Hutchins of McLean, VA, Melanie Brimer and husband, Jeff of Ellicott City, MD and Amy Chrest and husband, David of Cary;brothers, Wilbert Hutchins, Everett Hutchins, George Hutchins and Jack Hutchins; eight grandchildren and one great grandchild. Along with his parents, he was prededed in death by a brother, James Hutchins.

Bruce James Arrowood

Bruce James Arrowood, 80 of Flat Rock, died Saturday, February 15, 2014 at the Elizabeth House.

A native of Rutherford County, he was the son of the late Herbert & Lokie Arrowood.  He is also preceded in death by a brother Justin Arrowood.  Bruce served in the US Army in the 63rd Engineer Battalion (Combat).  He was a member of East Flat Rock Baptist Church where he served as a deacon.  Bruce also worked for many years with General Electric and First Federal Savings & Loan. 

He was a beloved member of the Henderson County community, with a wide range of friends, and enjoyed many activities throughout is life.

He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Gladys Arrowood; two sons, Kenny Arrowood and his wife Evon Anders and Michael Arrowood all of Hendersonville; two granddaughters, Summer Arrowood of Nashville, TN and Holly Arrowood of Chapel Hill, NC; one brother, Donald Arrowood and his wife Betty; a sister Jerleen McEntire and her husband Jesse, all of Rutherfordton; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM on Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at East Flat Rock First Baptist Church.  Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be sent to: The StoreHouse, 627 7th Avenue East, Hendersonville, NC 28792. The StoreHouse is a food and hygiene pantry that serves the basic necessities of the people in Henderson County.
