NC wildfire still growing, rain in the forecast
A large wildfire in the scenic Linville Gorge Wilderness could still take days to extinguish.
The Asheville Citizen-Times reported Saturday that the fire has grown to about 2,700 acres after breaking containment lines along the south side of the blaze at Chimney Gap.
Officials cautioned Friday that lingering smoke from the blaze held the potential to create a "super fog" that could create hazardous driving conditions in surrounding areas. The North Carolina Highway Patrol reported no serious accidents or heavy fog in the area Saturday morning.
U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman Deborah Walker said Friday the fire is about 40 percent contained. About 100 firefighters have been intentionally burning areas in an effort to contain the wildfire. Authorities are hoping rain forecast for late Sunday and early Monday might help.
