Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

People in the Hollis community now have a way to recycle their old items and help others at the same time.

The Solid Waste Environmental Education Panel (SWEEP) has opened a Swap Shop at the convenience center in Hollis. It has been operating since mid-February.

“The point of the Swap Shop is for people to bring in things that are still good and they don’t want to throw away. There is no money exchange. Someone else can come and get it for nothing,” said Frank Chyz, chairman of SWEEP. “We accept practically anything except for upholstered furniture and clothing. We don’t want trash or broken stuff at the Swap Shop. Please only bring usable things that someone would be happy to get.”

According to Chyz, SWEEP is the educational arm of county’s Solid Waste Department. It was founded 25 years ago to begin the recycling process in Rutherford County. Since then there have been 10 convenience

centers set up in various areas where community members can bring their recyclables.

With the new one at Hollis center, seven of the convenience centers now have Swap Shops.

“If the other Swap Shops are any indication of how the one at Hollis is going to do, the stuff leaves out almost as quickly as it comes in,” Chyz said.

Other convenience centers with Swap Shops include Bill’s Creek, Gilkey, Golden Valley, Pea Ridge, Greenhill and Shiloh. SWEEP has no plans to add shops to the three other convenience centers.

“The one we put in at Hollis will be the last one. We would have liked to put in Swap Shops at the three other convenience centers but they can and do cause traffic jams,” Chyz said. “We can’t put them there for safety reasons.”

Chyz wants to encourage everyone in the county to make an effort to recycle.

“Our primary focus right now is education. Once the convenience centers were finished, we went back to our roots of educating people,” Chyz said. “We have to provide accessibility, convenience and education if we hope to increase the recycle rate in the county.”
