Little League president arrested
The president of Forest City Little League was arrested Thursday on charges of embezzlement and obtaining property by false pretense.
Marion Lee Mayes, 51, of Friendship Drive in Ellenboro, was arrested Thursday afternoon and later released from the Rutherford County Detention Facility under a $50,000 unsecured bond.
Mayes has been president about 10 years.
His arrest is the result of financial inaccuracies discovered by Forest City Finance Director Julie Scherer when the Little League submitted a financial compilation in order to receive the fiscal year 2013-14 Little League funds budgeted by the Town.
Scherer followed up with Mayes and told him the compilation appeared to have errors and the funds would not be released, Town Manager John Condrey said Friday.
The town has budgeted $16,000 for the Little League program.
Following a more detailed review of the financial reports by Scherer and Condrey, Police Chief Jay Jackson was notified of the inaccuracies. The police department began the investigation into the matter and Mayes was arrested Thursday.
When Town Council meets Monday at 6 p.m. for its regular business meeting at Cool Springs Administrative Office, West Main Street, council will discuss required financial statements for town funded athletic programs and new nonprofit guideline recommendations, Condrey said.
