8 accused of assaulting man trying to stop vandals
Asheville police have arrested eight men who they say assaulted a man trying to stop them from vandalizing a downtown store.
Police said two of the eight were arrested Tuesday, while the other six were arrested on Monday. The suspects range in age from 18 to 21 years old, and five of them are charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury.
According to police, the group was breaking flower planters outside the food co-op when the man saw them and asked them to stop. The group began daring each other to beat up the man, and several of them used a planter to beat him.
Sgt. Dave Romick said the 30-year-old man suffered facial injuries and was transported to Mission Hospital, where he was treated and released.
