Isothermal Community College (ICC) is hosting a special reception on Wednesday at The Foundation with Humpy Wheeler.

Howard Augustine "Humpy" Wheeler Jr., is the past president and general manager of NASCAR's Charlotte Motor Speedway and chariman of The Wheeler Company, a management consulting firm focused on professional sports. Isothermal President Walter Dalton came up with the idea for the event.

"It's a fundraiser for our development fund which we use for professional development activities," said Mike Gavin, director of marketing and community relations for ICC. "He and Walter are friends and Walter thought it would be a good way to raise a little money for the fund and for folks to be able to meet somebody who is such a unique North Carolinian."

Wheeler was born in Belmont and attended the University of South Carolina on a football scholarship and graduated with a degree in journalism. He has worked as a sports writer, television director, real estate manager and dirt track promoter. He also served as director of racing at Firestone Rubber and Tire Company.

Wheeler is credited with transforming the 1.5-mile speedway in Charlotte into one of the world's premier auto racing venues. He's a member of the International Motorsports Hall of Fame and has earned awards including National Auto Racing Promoter of the Year and the High Deery Memorial Award for outstanding service to the motorsports industry.

He has recently released a book, "Growing Up NASCAR: Racing's Most Outrageous Promoter Tells All," that chronicles his life and career in auto racing. During the reception, he will have copies of his book available for purchase.

The reception is from 5-6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Those interested in attending should contact Dee Dee Barnard at 828-395-1292.
