Several handshakes were exchanged and ‘good lucks’ uttered during the opening of candidate filing for municipal elections at the Rutherford County Board of Elections on Friday.

Mayors Don Baynard (Ruth), Mickey Bland (Spindale), Jimmy Dancy (Rutherfordton), Bob Keith (Lake Lure) and Dennis Tarlton (Forest City) met at the Board of Elections on Old Fairground Road in Spindale promptly at noon to file for re-election together, during what Dancy called a historical event.

“This may be the first time in history this is happening, that we are all filing together at the same time,” Dancy said. “It’s also a significant day because Bob, Dennis and I were all elected as mayors for the first time together.”

According to Dancy, the five mayors filing together shows even more significance in that it represents the shared camaraderie and positive working relationships between the towns.

Other town council members filing for re-election on Friday included Stanley Clements and Terry Cobb of Rutherfordton, Steve Holland and Shawn Moore of Forest City, Mike Ellenburg and Chris Adkins of Ruth and John Moore of Lake Lure.

For candidates seeking town council seats, filing for municipal elections closes on Friday, July 19 at noon.

Mayor Mitch Harrill of Bostic is the sixth mayor whose term ends in 2013.

Other town board members up for re-election in 2013 include:

Chimney Rock Village — Frank Campbell and Robert Wald;
