Martin Luther King events Thursday, Saturday
Two Martin Luther King celebrations are scheduled this week.
A Martin Luther King Day Celebration will be held at 11 a.m. in the Library Auditorium of Isothermal Community College on Thursday. The event is sponsored by Isothermal's Afro-American Club and the Uncommon Male Mentoring Program.
Phillip Forney will deliver comments on the topic, "His Legacy Lives On."
Forney is pastor of Wheat's Creek Baptist Church and is a sixth grade social studies teacher at Chase Middle School,.
He is pursuing his Masters in Leadership Education at Gardner-Webb University and has a personal goal to become a school principal.
Forney is also a parent and husband and a former football player. While playing for East Tennessess State University, he was a three year starter at defensive end. He also played for the Jacksonville Bulls in the United States Football League and with National Football League's St. Louis Cardinals.
On Saturday, a Martin Luther King event begins at 7:30 a.m. at New AME Zion Church in Forest City. Breakfast will be served from 7:30 a.m. until about 9 a.m. when Tyreke Johnson will deliver the message.
Johnson, an R-S Central High School graduate, is a youth minister in Charlotte and is a son of Alfred and Barbara Johnson of Forest City.
The public is invited to attend the events.
