TJCA wins senior challenge
Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy (TJCA) bested the competition and won the 2014 Isothermal Community College Senior Challenge on Thursday.
The TJCA Academic Team beat Rutherford Early College High School (REaCH) 355-120 in the final round.
"This was a very difficult competition and there is a lot of luck involved," Kimberly Llloyd, coach of the team, said. "There was a lot of math and all teams present had a win and everybody worked hard."
The event began at 8:30 a.m. and went six rounds before the final round. Competing teams were TJCA, REaCH, R-S Central and Chase high schools.
"My team did really well. One of the best things about this team is they have fun no matter what," Angel Ledbetter, coach of REaCH, said. "They are a really good group of kids who worked really hard and I'm glad they got to compete today."
Max Teddy, member of the TJCA team, said he was really proud of how his team worked together during the competition.
"We liked the question set and it worked well with our team and our strengths," Teddy said.
Philip Guadagno, captain of the REaCH team, was also proud of his team and is looking forward to next year's competition.
"This is the first time since I joined freshman year that we've made it to the championship," Guadagno said. "It's good to know we were able to compete for the championship with a team who deserves it. And there's always next year."
Team members for TJCA are Bradley Lloyd, Daniel Federici, Drew Murphy, Ben Harris, David Advent and Teddy.
REaCH team members are Dayana Castellon, Jackie Perini, Kellan Jones, Conner Enloe, Micah Laughter, Austin Price and Guadagno.
