Southern food meets Southern hospitality at Tangy Cafe and Eatery, which officially celebrated the opening of its doors during a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday morning.

Local government officials, downtown merchants and community members joined owners Jonathan ("J.J.") and Cynthia Surratt at the restaurant, located at 213 North Main Street in Rutherfordton.

"It is always exciting when a new business opens," said Clark Poole, Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce director. "We are glad you're here and we hope you have a long, successful business life here."

Originally from Shelby, Cynthia has a passion for cooking and more than 20 years of restaurant experience. She and J.J. live in Rutherford County and have the support of their seven children, many close friends and several community members to help make Tangy successful.

"I'm appreciative of everyone who has come out to support us and who has welcomed us with open arms," Cynthia said. "It's a true statement that this area really is small-town friendly."

The food at Tangy is familiar and straightforward, with the goal of providing the highest quality of fresh food available and thrilling customers with everything that is made.

According to Cynthia, "Tangy gives basic American food a twist."

The restaurant offers breakfast, lunch and dinner and includes kids' items and a dessert menu. From shrimp and grits and fried green tomatoes to fresh salads and chicken and waffles, there are items on Tangy's menu that will appeal to any palate.

"On behalf of the town, thank you for choosing Rutherfordton," said Rutherfordton Mayor Jimmy Dancy during the ribbon-cutting ceremony. "In many towns we see storefronts open, but businesses like yours are a way to move forward and have a vibrant town. In turn, we as citizens need to support you."

"And on behalf of the county, we want to thank you and we wish you great success," echoed County Commissioner Bill Eckler. "If you're successful here in Rutherfordton, you'll be successful in the county as well."
