After months of planning, organizing and more planning, the Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce is getting set for its annual reverse raffle.

The raffle is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7 at The Foundation located on the campus of Isothermal Community College.

The raffle serves as one of two major fundraisers for the Chamber each year. The other event is the annual golf tournament.

"The proceeds go to help fund the things that the Chamber does," said Clark Poole, Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce director. "It is also a great way for people to come together and have a great time."

This year's event will have a theme to it entitled "Christmas and All That Jazz." Part of the event will include a jazz ensemble to go along with the traditional raffle of door prizes and cash, with the top prize being $10,000.

"This year, rather than it just being a hodgepodge, we decided to have a theme and change the food arrangement as well as offer better door prizes," Poole said.

He said that this year's event will have more money as prizes this year.

"People seem to get very excited about it," Poole said.

Poole said that the event began in 1989 and was originally held in October. In 1997, the event was moved to The Foundation and was held in December. It has been at The Foundation and in December since.

This year will mark the first year that the reverse raffle has had a theme attached to it.

"This year, rather than it just being a hodgepodge, we decided to have a theme and change the food arrangement as well as offer better door prizes," Poole said. "The raffle committee has worked very diligently to get the raffle together."

He said that the raffle committee has concluded approximately two months of work to prepare for Friday's event.

"It is a fun event for the Chamber and we are excited about the entire event," Poole said. "Even though we see it as a fun event, it does take a lot of work to pull it off."

Tickets to the reverse raffle are still available at the Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce, located at 162 N. Main Street in Rutherfordton. For additional information, call 828-287-3090.

"If you don't buy a ticket, I can guarantee that you won't have a chance to win," Poole said.
