'Shining for 40 years'
Trinity Christian School is letting its light shine this year.
The school kicked off its 40th anniversary celebration on Wednesday with the theme "Shining for 40 years."
"This is fabulous. We are so excited that we are here and we just want to shine our light," Head of School Tiffany Walker said.
The theme of the year comes from Bible verse Matthew 5:16, "Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven."
"We had a 40th anniversary committee get together this summer and work on the theme for everything," Walker said. "Making it to 40 years is a big deal in this economy today."
The mission of Trinity is to educate and develop the whole person for the glory of God by providing an atmosphere of academic excellence within Christian, interdenominational, family-centered framework.
The school was founded in 1974 by four families from varied denominational backgrounds. It opened in a small house on Georgia Street in Spindale and once the enrollment tripled moved to Spencer Baptist Church.
In 1976 the school was chartered and incorporated as a not-for-profit corporation. In 1980 the school entered on an 8.5 acre tract of land in Rutherfordton that was donated by a local businessman. The first building was constructed by a group of parents. In the fall of 2009 the named was changed to Trinity Christian School.
During the celebration on Wednesday students recounted this history in front of their peers, parents and other friends of the school. Priscilla McBrayer, dean of faculty, also introduced the school's new 4TC campaign. For the campaign anyone who donates $40 to the school will become a member of the 4TC Club and will receive a 4TC decal.
"A donation of $40 can purchase two student classroom chairs. It can also help us improve our technology and we would love to have an electronic piano. We would also love to expand our fine arts program," McBrayer said.
The school will also be selling bracelets that say "Shining for 40 years," for $1 in the office.
Walker also announced the school received accreditation from the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) for five years. The school was presented a plaque for its accomplishment.
"ACSI sent us requirements that needed to be done which consisted of multiple notebooks and updating all of our curriculum and meeting curriculum standards, building standards, safety standards and just the whole gamut," McBrayer said. "It's really a big deal. It means we are on par with any Christian school in the U.S. We meet the rigorous standards that any Christian school has to meet."
The school will continue to have events celebrating their 40th anniversary throughout the year. It will conclude with an all-day celebration on Saturday, April 12, 2014.
If anyone is interested in donating to the school they can send money to Trinity Christian School 299 Deter Street Rutherfordton, NC 28139.
