Rutherfordton, Spindale requesting mutual aid for structure fires
RUTHERFORDTON — When the Rutherfordton Town Council meets at 5:30 p.m.Wednesday, the town board will discuss the adoption of a resolution between Rutherfordton and Spindale regarding automatic mutual aid for structure fires.
Rutherfordton fire chief Tommy Blanton and Spindale fire chief Billy Conner have been discussing at length, the need for personnel from the respective fire department when dispatched to a structure fire.
Because of the difficulty in assuring a sufficient number of firefighters on the scene of a structure fire for life safety issues, the fire chiefs are requesting the automatic mutual aid dispatch.
There will be a slight cost to “roll” the fire vehicles on a structure fire, but the life safety issues far outweigh those costs, reported the town manager.
Also Wednesday, council will discuss continued funding by the North Carolina Legislature for the Clean Water Management Trust Fund.
Council will also be reminded of its Jan. 26 workshop to discuss such items as the Bechtler House rental; use of the Woodrow Jones building, space needs at Norris Library; the US 221 bypass; public works facility; funding for projects and also the vision for the town in five years and 10 years.
Council will also receive the 2011-2012 audit; will receive the roster of firefighters for annual certification; and will discuss a request to lower the rental rate for a non-profit at the Woodrow Jones building.
In old business, Council will discuss the possibility of a July 4 event, based on town funding; and will receive the ordinances regarding demolition of unfit dwellings and abandoned structures in town.
The meeting will be held at town hall.
