July 4 celebration approved for Rutherfordton

There will be a July 4 celebration in Rutherfordton again this year.

Meeting Wednesday night for its regular business session, Town Council voted to pay town employees who have to work on the holiday time-and-a-half.

Of the event costs, $2,600 will come from the Rutherford Town Revitalization's budget,Town Manager Karen Andrews said Thursday morning.

The Town's 225th Anniversary Committee hosted a July 4 celebration in 2012 and the event was a big success. RTR board members and others wanted to continue the patriotic tradition.

The anniversary committee was recognized by Mayor Jimmy Dancy for all their efforts during the anniversary year.

Council also decided if structures should be moved or demolished the owner must come to town hall to receive a permit before beginning the work.

Council also agreed to allow the Rutherfordton Women's League to host a Color Run™ in conjunction with Mayfest. The name of the race will be Gold Rush and the color gold will be the only color used that day for the race.

Proceeds from the Color Run™ will go to the Communities In Schools backpack program.The race is a one of a kind experience that is less about speed and more about enjoying a color crazy day with friends and family. 

Council also agreed to install up to five street lights in Rutherford Towne. 

David Covington, president of the Rutherfordton Golf Club, reported activity at the golf course is doing well, saying the weather had been very cooperative and Amanda King talked about parking issues in town.

Council rescheduled two of its upcoming meetings. The board will meet April 10 instead of April 3 and  May 8 rather than May 1.
