Registration opens for Gears & Gables

Cyclists raising money for home repairs
Apr. 02, 2013 @ 08:00 AM

For the sixth year, Rutherford County cyclists are joining forces with Rutherford Housing Partnership to provide both a challenge for cyclists and funds to help the local nonprofit provide urgent repairs to homes.  Gears & Gables, a one-day fully supported ride around Rutherford County, will be Saturday, May 4, during the annual Mayfest in Downtown Rutherfordton.

Registration is $30, and forms are available at — www.RutherfordHousingPartnership.com.  Riders can also register on the morning of the event. Pre-registration guarantees a T-shirt.

“We will have three routes –  all new – one 30 miles, one 60 and 100 miles,” said Alan Herrick, a local cyclist who heads the planning.  “The ride will start downtown and move into the southern end of the county this year.”

Don't ride?  No problem.  Non-riders can support the cause for $30 as "Ghost Riders," receiving an invitation to lunch and a T-shirt proclaiming "I didn't ride Gears & Gables but I support RHP."

Rutherford Housing Partnership is a small, local nonprofit providing urgently needed repairs to improve the health and safety of qualified low-income homeowners in Rutherford County.  RHP provides materials; volunteers provide labor.

The riders will set out at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 4, from First Baptist Church Rutherfordton, ending back at the church for a full meal.  Along the route will be rest stops.

Between now and April 20, RHP also will be seeking sponsors and volunteers.  Sponsors will be featured on event T-shirts, on signage along the routes, on the RHP website and in event advertising.  For questions about the ride, contact Alan Herrick at  429-0739 or email: roccycling@yahoo.com.   To sponsor or volunteer, call the RHP office at 248-3431.
