A 45-year-old Morganton man was arrested at the site of a motor vehicle crash Wednesday afternoon. He man faces several traffic violations and a charge of misdemeanor larceny.

Carl Ernest Bright of Windy Woods was driving a 1992 Ford pick-up truck on Hudlow Road at about 12:30 p.m. when he passed a Honda Odyssey traveling north near Mt. Vernon Baptist Church. Driving the Honda was Amy Brackett Lavender, 40, of Bostic. She was not injured when Bright sideswiped her van.

She and several other witnesses called 911 reporting a reckless driver.

After hitting the van, the North Carolina Highway Patrol said Bright continued north on Hudlow Road and lost control of the pick-up in a curve, overturning off the highway.

His passenger, David Head, had to be cut from the vehicle and was taken to Rutherford Regional Medical Center for treatment.

When the pick-up truck overturned, several riding lawnmowers fell off the back of the truck and came to a rest in a field off the road. Rutherford County Sheriff Chris Francis said his department is investigating the possible larceny of the lawnmowers — for scrap metal —  from Kitten Trail near Whitesides and Hudlow.

Bright was transported to the Rutherford County Detention Facility. He is charged with misdemeanor larceny by the sheriff's department.

The NCHP has charged Bright with seat belt violation, hit and run property damage, carleess and reckless driving, passing in a no passing zone.

Assisting at the scene were Trooper Nick Horton, Trooper John Horton and Trooper Baxter Hill, sheriff's officers, traffic control, Hudlow firefighters and Rutherford County EMS.
