A 46-year-old Cliffside resident died at 2:08 a.m. Thursday after the Ford Explorer he was driving collided with an 18-wheeler on US 221 at Hines Road.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol said Joseph Mike Roach went left of center and struck the tractor trailer driven by Michael Eugene Ledford, 33, of Bakersville.

Neither the truck driver nor his passenger were injured. According to the NCHP, Roach had been struggling with medical problems and his family was unaware he was out of the house at the time.

The collision resulted also in a fuel spill that required the road to be closed until after 7 a.m.

Although the crash was in the US 221 work zone, it occurred well after the active construction work was suspended for the day.
