The 2013 Lake Lure Olympiad hosted by Rumbling Bald Resort at Lake Lure and Chimney Rock at Chimney Rock State Park begins Friday and concludes Sunday.

Anchored by its “3 Races in 3 Days Challenge,” with competitive open water swim events, the sports festival brings athletes of all levels to the event.

There is a 10K Dam Run on Friday, Lake Lure Triathlon on Saturday and Race to the Rock on Sunday.

As of Wednesday, seven Rutherford County athletes have registered for the Triathlon.

From Lake Lure are Eileen Evans and Robin Proctor, W.D. Hutchins from Bostic, April Mayse and Andy Womick of Forest City, Tommy Wilson of Spindale and Rob Nicholson of Union Mills.

In addition to the Rutherford athletes, more than 250 others from across the Carolinas and Georgia are registered. There are 78 remaining slots.

Exclusive to the Olympiad is the once-a-year opportunity to cycle 25 miles or run 5 kilometers to the top of Chimney Rock in the Race to the Rock.

Kids can also vie for medals in several sporting events. They include the Jr. Olympiad featuring the 40-yard dash, basketball shoot, baseball throw, obstacle course and soccer kick challenge.

The Lake Lure Olympiad is more than a sports festival that brings families together.

Since 2005, the Olympiad has donated $220,000 to area nonprofit organizations.
