Visitor center renovations underway
Renovations are underway at the new Lake Lure & Blue Ridge Foothills Visitors Center in Lake Lure.
When work is completed the center will be operated by the Rutherford County Tourism Development Authority (TDA). The tourism organization has a five year agreement with the Town of Lake Lure to manage and operate the facility.
TDA plans to invest more than $100,000 in the interior and exterior renovation of the buildings and the interior displays.
The building is the former home of the Hickory Nut Gorge Visitors Center operated by the Hickory Nut Gorge Chamber of Commerce, who managed the center for the past 25 years.
While renovations are underway at the visitors center, TDA's Mobile Welcome Center is in Lake Lure with Cindy Spears managing the center.
The mobile center is located beside the welcome center.
The TDA has relocated its main office to The Bechtler House in Rutherfordton, the result of a new campaign to raise funds to eventually purchase the house.
Recently TDA voted to form a tourism Asset Foundation (TAF) to raise funds through grants and donors for the development of the permanent and tangible, non-event related tourism assets as it relates to history, agritourism, outdoors and local culture in Rutherford County.
