Kindergarten registration is underway

Kindergarten registration is underway for Rutherford County Schools.

Registration for kindergarten began this month and runs through summer. However, orientation will be held in April 30 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

"We encourage parents to register children as soon as possible so they will be ready to attend orientation on April 30," said Steven Helton, director of elementary education. "Registering early gives parents more time to review registration information, ask questions, and schedule screening appointments."

Registration is held at all elementary school during regular school hours. To register, you must have your child's birth certificate, social security card and immunization records. State law required that children be five years of age on or before Aug. 31, 2013 to enroll.

Don Ingle, principal of Harris Elementary School, says that the school averages between 80 - 100 kindergartners per year.

"We have had just a handful of students register so far. The important thing that we stress is that we would like them enrolled early so we can prepare for our budget," Ingle said. "We have been encouraging parents that have students here already to spread the word to their neighbors and anyone they know who might have a student starting kindergarten."

Marsha Jolley, kindergarten teacher at Harris, says that parents should start working with their child on basic information before they enter the classroom.

"If they can count at least to 10 or above, know some or all letters, upper and lowercase, their colors and shapes that would be helpful," Jolley said. "If they could just do those little things, they would be off to a good start already."

Upon registering their child, parents will be given a handbook which includes tips for getting them prepared for school.

"The handbook includes tips for enhancing school readiness as they work with children at home for the remainder of this school year and over the summer," Helton said.

Some students are already prepared for next year thanks to the school's North Carolina Pre-K program.

"They are excited for kindergarten because of this program. Kindergarten expands on what they get here," said Briana Reid, whose son Braden is in Pre-K at Harris. "My first son who went through the program was completely prepared for kindergarten. There were no tears on that first year of school."
