Run for your valentine

Couples in Rutherford County can celebrate Valentine’s Day early by chasing their one and only to the finish line.

On Saturday, Feb. 10, Forest City Parks and Recreation and Fitness Solutions will host the second annual “Run for Your Valentine 5K Skirt Chaser.”

“We just thought it would be fun. We had employees starting a new wellness program and we were trying to get them out and doing things,” said Myra King, administrative assistant for Forest City Parks and Recreation. “We had a bunch of employees that actually ran it, finished and are still running today. It has been a great thing.”

King collaborated with Fitness Solutions Personal Trainer Mandy Huffman to organize the race.

“It is a good way to get moving, participate and support local organizations and get rewarded for it,” Huffman said. “Last year we had 10 to 15 people who had never run before, do this race because it was a town event.”

This year, the race is on Sunday, Feb. 10 at the McNair Stadium in Forest City. Prizes will be given for the best overall male and female time, and best combined male and female time.

“You can register as a couple if you want because the best couple combined time gets a prize. The girls get a three minute head start, so there is a good possibility of a girl crossing the finish line first,” Huffman said.

There will also be a prize given for best male and female costume.

“My favorite part is seeing the costumes. All of the people there and their cute little costumes is great,” King said. “Other than that, my other favorite part is seeing the ones that have never done it before, even if they walked across the finish line. It was just awesome.”

King says that one of the best parts about the 5K is that you can walk it.

“One good thing is that you can walk it. You do not have to be a runner. If you just want to get out and be challenged to go that 3.1 miles, that is the best way to do it,” King said.

Huffman says that the group is hoping the race will continue to grow and they will eventually be able to bring in a half marathon in the future.
