Sewer study on tap for Rutherfordton workshop
The possibility of participating in a county wide sewer study will be discussed Saturday by Rutherfordton Town Council during a special council workshop at Town Hall beginning at 8 a.m.
The sewer study will begin the workshop discussion.
Rutherford County, Spindale, Forest City, Lake Lure, Ellenboro and Rutherfordton have discussed the potential for a joint sewer study in the past. Rutherford County voted last month to participate in the study.
Forest City Town Council discussed the joint study at its regular business meeting Monday night, but took no action. Some council members said they are not in favor of a study that would not benefit them as much as the other towns, and yet they would have to pay the majority of the cost.
The cost for Forest City to participate would be $20,553, Rutherfordton cost would be $7,639; Spindale's fee would be $7,095; Rutherford County, $44,708 and Lake Lure, $7,505.
The study would be funded 50 percent grant and 50 percent local match.Sewer customers per municipality are: Forest City, 4,877; Lake Lure, 982; Rutherfordton,1,558; Spindale, 1,500; Rutherford County, 61; a total 8,978.
Other items for the Rutherfordton workshop will be visioning exercises and the next steps for the town.
After a lunch break, council will prioritize the morning's projects.
