Mental Health support group/open house meeting tonight

Jan. 24, 2013 @ 04:00 AM

Anyone dealing with mental health issues is invited to an open house at 7 p.m. today at the Crawford Building, Rutherford Regional Medical Center, sponsored by the Rutherford, Cleveland Chapter, National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).

NAMI is the nation's largest advocate and support group of mentally ill and offers education and support programs for an educational program and a support program.

Betty Frye of Boiling Springs, who serves as president of the Rutherford, Cleveland Chapter, said, "People who come to the meeting tonight can hear about the support and resources provided by NAMI."

Frye said she became involved with NAMI in 1986 when she was living in Houston, Texas.  She and her husband's son had a mental illness and they searched for help with resources provided to the families and the patient.

"I knew there had to be somebody out there or some place out there, a support group for the family," Frye said. "We didn't know what to do."

"That changed our lives," she said.

Frye said at that time if their son wasn't getting the services he was promised, she would go to NAMI for help and the organization always responded.

NAMI is dedicated to building better lives for those affected by mental illness.
