Funeral services for Dolly Twitty are Saturday
FOREST CITY — A funeral service is scheduled Saturday at 1 p.m. for Dolly Robert Twitty, 76. The service will be held at Union Hill A. M. E. Zion Church in Union Mills.
Twitty went missing from his Old Union Mills Road home sometime after his sister, Shirley Twitty, checked on him at 10 p.m. July 16. The next morning when she went to check on him, he was missing.
In the five months since he was reported missing, hundreds of volunteers from Rutherford County and the Carolinas, spent hundreds of hours searching for Twitty.
His remains were discovered on Dec. 14 about one half mile from his home in a location of US 221, in a deep thicket of under brush.
Twitty was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease and was on medication. When he left his home, he didn't have his medicine.
During the day after his disappearance, volunteer teams gathered at the Union Hill church, which was a makeshift command post for the first few days, and where the church people brought food and water for the volunteers.
The Union Mills Fire Department station house was also a command post where emergency teams met for briefing before heading out on numerous searches.
The Twitty family kept vigil during the searches always hoping, and praying for closure.
When Twitty's remains were discovered two weeks ago, his sister said the family did have closure, but it was a very sad time. They no longer had hope he would be found alive.
Thompson's Mortuary in Forest City is serving the Twitty family.
