Soaring for a cause

Runners will be soaring through South Mountain Christian Camp to benefit children with asthma this month.

Tyler Campbell, member of Boy Scout Troop 129, is hosting a “Soar Like an Eagle Scout” 5K, a 3.1 mile race. He is doing the run as his Eagle Scout project and all of the proceeds will go to Camp WheezKnot, a camp offered by Rutherford Regional Health System for children with asthma.

“I run a lot and I’ve always wanted to put on a 5k. I thought why not give it a try,” Campbell said. “I went to Camp WheezKnot when I was younger and I enjoyed it. They don’t charge the campers to go, so I figured I could help them out.”

The 5k will be at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 20 at South Mountain Christian Camp (SMCC) in Bostic. Campbell also attended SMCC when he was younger and thought it would be the perfect site for the run.

“Tyler contacted me last spring, he hadn’t done our trail run out here in the fall but he had heard about it and he explained he was looking for a place to do a run. We always want to try to help out with projects like that, especially with Boy Scouts or senior projects,” said Steve Collins, executive director of SMCC. “We’ve got this great property here and we want to make full use of it. It’s a great place to do a run.”

Runners can pre-register for the race until midnight on Saturday, July 6 for $20 on the Rutherford Outdoor Coalition website. The cost to register on race day is $25.

The top three male and female overall and in each age group will receive an award and the first 75 who register will receive a free t-shirt.

“I’m very excited. I hope I get a lot of runner,” Campbell said.
