Funeral services will be held at 5 p.m. today at Salem United Methodist Church in Bostic for Matthew Scott Lail, 19, who lost his life in a single vehicle crash at 2 a.m. Wednesday.

Lail was a student at Isothermal Community College and a 2012 graduate of East Rutherford High School where he played football.

He was employed by the Town of Forest City Parks and Recreation Department.

Lail and a friend  C.J. Sappenfield, 20, of Bostic, were together in a Honda Civic when it crashed off the Bostic Sunshine Highway Wednesday morning.

Sappenfield remains in the neurotrauma intensive care unit at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. He underwent surgery Wednesday.

Both youths were ejected from the vehicle as it rolled over about five times.

Sgt. Kevin Owens of the North Carolina Highway Patrol said they were traveling north about 2.5 miles from Washburn General Store, when it appeared the car traveled to the edge of the road on the right side.

The car traveled 408 feet after the driver began to lose control.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol is continuing their investigation.

First Sgt. Chris McClelland said Thursday morning the NCHP has been in conversation with the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Bureau regarding the wreck.

The Highway Patrol said the youths were not wearing belts, traveling at an excessive speed and alcohol was also a  factor in the crash.

Investigating officers at the crash scene were Trooper B.Y. Hill and Owens.
