It's the time of year for fresh fruit and vegetables. Luckily, with the opening of the Farmers Market of Rutherford County, community members no longer have to brave the grocery stores to find them.

The market officially opened for the season today. It will now be open every Tuesday from 7 a.m.-noon, Thursday from 1- 6 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m.- noon.

"We usually open around the first of June, but I talked with vendors to see if they would have anything ready this early and they said they did," said Ricky Horne, market manager. "We are trying something new this year with the evening time. We also added Saturday because we had people tell us they wished we were open on the weekend last year."

The market, which began in the 1970s, was previously located at the Rutherford County Fairgrounds, but had to relocate when it was decided that the site was unsafe. Last year they opened in their new location in Spindale.

"I think it will do better this year. We have had a year of exposure here and more people know about it now," Horne said.

Prior to this year, only Rutherford County farmers were allowed to sell their produce at the market. This season, it is also open to farmers of surrounding counties. The mission of the market is to provide agriculture producers a marketing source for locally grown products that is consumer driven.

"This will help the market to grow to bring in vendors," Horne said. "It will also give more variety to the public."

Horne said that anyone who is interested in being a vendor can contact him. To have a table for a single day it will cost $5 and to purchase a table for the season is $50.

The Farmers Market of Rutherford County is located at 1630 U.S. 74A in Spindale. For more information, like Farmers Market of Rutherford County on Facebook.
