Arrest made in Ellenboro stabbing
Detectives with the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office arrested Frederick Darnell Cray, 29, of Ellenboro, Wednesday evening after receiving a call in reference to a domestic dispute involving three individuals at 113 Old U.S. Highway 74 in Ellenboro.
According to law enforcement who responded to the incident, an argument between Cray and his girlfriend Deanne Zobrist escalated to a physical altercation between Cray and Deanne’s father, 55-year-old Robert Arnold Zobrist.
During the altercation, Mr. Zobrist incurred multiple stab wounds, the most serious located on his neck area.
He was transported by Regional One helicopter to Spartanburg Regional Hospital, where he underwent surgery for his wounds late Wednesday evening.
Zobrist was in stable condition as of Thursday afternoon, unable to talk very well but able to communicate by writing.
“His wounds were certainly life-threatening and he is very, very fortunate to be alive,” said Sheriff Chris Francis. “If it had not been for the 911 dispatcher as well as Rutherford County EMS, Rescue, first responders from Ellenboro Fire Department and Regional One flight crew, we could have very well been working a homicide. And we’re very fortunate that we’re not.”
Cray was arrested at the scene and charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.
He received a $100,000 secured bond and is currently in custody in the Rutherford County Jail.
