Man receives $500,000 bond for 20 charges

Robert William Smith, 41, of U.S. Highway 74 in Ellenboro, was located and arrested Thursday on warrants for first and second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor.

According to Rutherford County Sheriff Chris Francis, the charges originated in May 2011.

During the investigation, detectives with the Sheriff's Office collaborated with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.

As part of the detectives' investigation, Smith's computer was confiscated to be processed and material was discovered on the device concerning the sexual exploitation of a minor.

Additional material was also found on his cell phone, appearing to contain images of victims ranging from ages seven to 12, according to the report filed by detectives.

Smith received $500,000 in secured bonds for charges including 10 counts of first-degree sexual exploitation of a minor and 10 counts second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor.

He is currently in custody at the Rutherford County Jail.

Due to the sensitivity of the charges, the Sheriff's Office is not releasing any further information regarding the case.
