Thirteen-year-old improving after gun shot injury
Ashley Williams, 13, is still in critical but stable condition at Carolina's Medical Center in Charlotte, after undergoing at least five surgeries from injuries sustained from a gun shot wound on Friday, June 21.
Williams was injured by a .45-caliber handgun, the bullet hitting her arm before entering her abdomen.
The incident occurred at a relative's residence on East High Road in Ellenboro, and according to deputies with the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office, the gun shot was accidental.
Deputies report that Ray Ponder, a cousin of Williams, is responsible for inflicting the accidental wound.
Local fundraisers are planned to raise money for Williams, including a benefit hot dog supper and silent auction on Saturday, July 6 at 4 p.m. at Campfield Memorial Baptist Church in Ellenboro.
