U.S. Senator Kay Hagan congratulated six North Carolina schools, including Rutherford Early College High (REaCH) in Spindale, that have been named 2013 Blue Ribbon Schools by the U.S. Department of Education, which is recognizing 236 schools across the country for their overall academic achievement or their progress in improving academic achievement.

“I congratulate North Carolina’s six Blue Ribbon schools for their exemplary work educating our students and earning this prestigious honor,” Hagan said. “Education is the key to opportunity for our children and a strong North Carolina economy, and as a member of the Senate’s education committee, I work to support our students, teachers and administrators every day so that our kids can follow a path to successful careers and fulfilling lives.”

As part of the program, schools are recognized in either the “Exemplary High Performance” category or the “Exemplary Improving” category. Rutherford Early College High was selected as part of the “Exemplary High Performance” category, which means the schools rank as the highest performing in North Carolina based on state assessments or nationally-normed tests.

The five additional North Carolina schools earning the honor are Providence Spring Elementary School in Charlotte; Shiloh Elementary School in Monroe; Weddington Middle School in Matthews; Middle College of NC A&T in Greensboro and Greene Early College High School in Snow Hill. The six North Carolina schools will be honored by the Department of Education in Washington, DC November 18-19.
