Chase continues winning streak
The Chase High Speech and Debate team travelled to Northwest Guilford High School in Greensboro on Saturday, Dec. 8. There were over 600 hundred students representing 41 schools participating in this tournament.
Placing 1st or 2nd in rounds of individual events or winning single flights of debate were: Harley Burgess, Allison Stark, and Charlie Beheler.
Chase continued their winning streak placing a champion in all three categories of competition.
Cheyenne Chase and Dominick Childs took 4th place overall in duo interpretation, Marsden Murray and Charity head took 3rd place overall while Angel Proctor and Drew Terrell were named champions of that event. Angel Proctor was also named champion of Radio Announcing. This is the 4th consecutive tournament that Angel has been named champion of that event. Alex Larsen also claimed a championship title in Varsity Lincoln Douglas debate beating out 40 other competitors in the field.
Due to the efforts of these Trojans, Chase picked up the 6th place overall sweepstakes award. Rutherford County students now hold the top three spots in Duo Interpretation for the State of North Carolina with Proctor/Terrell (Chase) in 1st place, Murray/Head (Chase) in 2nd place, and Kring/Wilkerson (East Rutherford) in 3rd place overall.
“My students continue to do well on all levels. This was a massive competition involving the most competitive N.C. programs. West truly met East head on and my students proved they can still hold their own against the larger programs or the ones with ‘academy’ after their name.”
Harley Burgess travels to Harvard University to debate in February and Chase will host its tournament on the 23rd of that month.
