"My advice to you as you move forward is to continue to hold fast to the mission of the college and what you are here for," Myra Johnson, president of Isothermal Community College, told the board of trustees during their regular business meeting on Tuesday.

This meeting marked her final regular meeting with the board before she retires this month.

"I'm fortunate to have a board that worked well together and continues to work well together. I have tremendous respect for everyone here," Johnson said. "In my mind, the college is in good shape and it's ready to take that step moving forward."

Johnson said that the accomplishment that she is most proud of during her tenure at the college are the changes that were made to its infrastructure. She and other faculty worked to improve the Learning College Manual, board bylaws and policy, the employee handbook and human resources policies.

During the meeting, the board also voted to adopt an admissions exception. This gives the college the right to refuse admission to any applicant if it's necessary to protect the safety of the applicant and other individuals.

"This is in reference to a change in the state board of community college manual. With this, if a students has had a situation at another college, we can refuse them admission," Johnson said. "We need to have some protection to deny admission to them."

Other new business included the approval of a Basic Law Enforcement Sponsorship Policy that says students must maintain sponsorship by a law enforcement agency until completion of the program.

"This has been a practice of the college forever. It has just not been in a written document," Johnson said. "They have to have a sponsorship until the completion of the program. If the students loses sponsorship, then they cannot continue in the program."

Also approved was a bylaw change regarding trustee recognition. The board previously approved the bylaws to recognize former trustees with a service plaque. This change will allow members of the trustee's family to receive the service plaque in the event that the former trustee is deceased.

Trustees also approved the following dates:

Retirement reception for Myra Johnson- April 29 at 11 a.m.

Curriculum graduation-May 14 at 7 p.m.

Adult High School graduation-May 15 at 7 p.m.

The next board meeting will be on Tuesday, June 11 at 8:30 a.m.
