South Mountain Christian Camp (SMCC) has created a way to reach out to youth in the Bostic community.

The camp is hosting a disc golf tournament, called So-Mo Dis-Go, on Sunday, April 21. They are encouraging all area youth groups to participate and the tournament will be followed by a youth worship service.

“We really want to partner with churches in the community here. We don’t want to just be a little separate organization up here and have nothing to do with churches in the community,” said Steve Collins, executive director of SMCC. “There are a lot of active youth groups in our community and sometimes they like to do big events, far away and sometimes they are just looking for something on a more local level. We want to be able to provide that in the disc golf tournament.”

The tournament is set up for teams of four. The course is 18 holes and prizes will be awarded to the top teams.

“This is our second tournament like this but this one is different because it’s set up as a team tournament. We really want people who are not experienced to feel comfortable playing. When you are not being graded as an individual but as a team, it helps a lot,” Collins said.

Teams can sign up online while space is still available.

“We still have plenty of space so we are encouraging everyone who wants to be involved to sign up and come on out. Even if they don’t get signed up ahead of time, there is a chance we might still have room for them,” Collins said. “If we are full and we absolutely can’t squeeze them in, they can still hang out and enjoy the afternoon with them.”

Events for the day will also include a longest throw and putting competition.

“Disc golf is so easy to pick up, you can fine tune your skills and get a lot better at it,” Collins said. “That’s the neat thing about the sport, it’s like going to play mini golf. You don’t have to have any big golfing skills to play. You can just pick it up, go with it and have a good time.”

Teams can sign up for the tournament online at Entry fee is $2 per player. For questions, call 828-245-3322.
