A 2013 graduate of the Rutherford Opportunity Center was critically injured in a motor vehicle accident Friday after the commencement exercises.

The graduate Stephen Tyler Watkins was driving a Ford Ranger pick-up truck on South Mountain Church Road near Bostic when he ran off the road and struck a tree.

James Bowen was a passenger. Both were flown to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center where Watkins is now in critical condition in the neuro trauma unit.

Randy Bostic, chief of the Bostic Fire Dept. said parents of the teens had been looking for them to be at home around 8 p.m.

The truck was discovered at about 11 p.m. and it took volunteers firefighters more than 90 minutes to free them from the vehicle.

The North Carolina Highway Patrolman at the scene suspected the crash had occurred a few hours earlier.
