Chatting about geometry
Kindergarten and eighth grade students learned about geometry together using Google Chat on Wednesday.
Lisa Buchanan, a kindergarten teacher at Sunshine Elementary School, teamed up with her daughter Ashley Buchanan who teaches math at Chase Middle School to bring geometry concepts to life using the technology.
“We have done it before and we usually do it when I start geometry in the classroom,” Lisa Buchanan said. “It’s a good way for them to realize the importance of learning it in kindergarten because they will use it again.”
The eighth grade students prepared a lesson and songs about geometry to do with the younger students. They chatted using the Promethean boards in the classrooms.
“I think they (eighth graders) were a little nervous at first, but they actually did really well and they did a little bit better than I was thinking,” Ashley Buchanan said. “We practiced yesterday and we hung the words to the songs up on the wall. The tunes of the songs were ‘Farmer in the Dell’ and ‘Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star,’ so it wasn’t too bad. They knew the tune they just had to put different words to it.”
The kindergarten students answered questions from the eighth graders and determined the difference between squares, triangles and rectangles.
“We are taking advantage of every opportunity to do something on the promethean board to enhance that learning,” Lisa Buchanan said.
Ashley Buchanan said they are hoping to Google Chat with the kindergarten class again in the spring.
