PHOTO: Car runs off road; man injured

North Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper Joe Horton and emergency medical personnel were at the scene of a one-vehicle crash Monday afternoon where O'Dell Salmon, 68, of Rutherfordton was injured. Salmon was traveling west in a Volkswagen Rabbit convertible when he ran off Coxe Road in a curve near Bob Hardin Road, Rutherfordton. After running off the road, the car struck a tree and spun around in the opposite direction. Salmon was entrapped in the vehicle and Rutherfordton firefighters had to cut him out Horton said it appeared he had on a seat belt. Salmon was transported to Rutherford Regional Medical Center. Rutherford County EMS, Rutherford County Rescue and sheriff's officers also assisted at the scene.

PHOTO: Backdrop rocks with symphony

In front of the mountains of Chimney Rock State Park, the Rutherford County Symphony kicked off the music concert season Saturday night at the Gathering Place in Chimney Rock Village. The symphony was the highlight of the annual SpringGo in the village. The symphony and the festival will be featured on Sunday's Spotlight Page, C1.

Mark Martin, human resources manager at Timken's Shiloh plant, presents a $76,000 check to Habitat for Humanity Executive Director Kim Freeman (right) as Sheila Cain, Habitat resource director joins them. This will be the second Timken Foundation-sponsored Habitat home in Rutherford County.  The first was dedicated to the Chassidy Brown Miller family 2013.

PHOTO: Drivers transported to hospital

Rachel McFarland Padgett of Mooresboro, driver of this 1995 Pontiac and Carolyn Cato Freeman of Bostic, driving the 2005 Nissan (left) were taken to Rutherford Regional Medical Center Wednesday after a rear end collision on South Broadway Street in Forest City. Police said Freeman's car was hit in the rear by Padgett's vehicle as it was stopped at the stoplight near the intersection of Pine Street. Padgett was charged with failure to reduce speed. Damage to her car was estimate to be $4,200 and damage to the Nissan was estimated to be $2,600.

VIDEO: Remembering the Hilltoppers

R-S Central High School held a pep rally to celebrate the premiere of 32-0. The documentary tells the story of the 1980 Hilltopper mens basketball team that went undefeated and won the 3A state championship. The movie premiered at The Foundation at Isothermal Community College on Saturday, April 11.
