A True Mayberry Classic

A piece of television history has found its way to Forest City.

The Bennett Classics Antique Auto Museum is now in possession of a vehicle that would make any “Andy Griffith Show” fan jump for joy...a 1963 Ford Galaxie 500, Andy Griffith Sheriff’s Car.

“I’m grateful to get it. It was a surprise for us. I didn’t expect to get a car with as much history as this one has,” said Buddy Bennett, museum owner.

What makes the car so special is that it was signed by Don Knotts, who played Barney Fife in The Andy Griffith Show. According to memorabilia that came with it, Knotts signed the car on Nov. 21, 2002 in Huntington, WV.

Bennett, a huge fan of The Andy Griffith Show, got the car from a friend.

“He called me and said ‘Buddy I have something you need. I am going to sell it to you if I can,” Bennett said. “I had wanted one for a while but I didn’t think I would get one this close to being right. We have been told it may have been used in the filming of the show, but we aren’t sure.”

The car is currently in the front of the museum, complete with a life-size cut out of Barney Fife.

“We are very pleased to have this,” Bennett said. “We are thinking it has found a permanent home in our museum.”
