Spencer Baptist celebrating 87th year
Spencer Baptist Church in Spindale will be celebrating its 87th birthday on Sunday, April 28, at 11 a.m.
All former and present members are invited to join the anniversary celebration.
Following the worship service, there will be a covered dish luncheon in the Family Life Center. Bring covered dishes; beverages and bread will be provided.
The church was established on April 11, 1926, when a group of believers met in the old Spindale Company Store house for a worship service. At this service it was suggested that on the following Lord’s Day another service be conducted in view of organizing a Baptist church. They met the following Sunday as planned and proceeded with the organization of Spencer Baptist Church. At this meeting approximately 200 people became charter members of the church.
Rev. M. M. Huntley was the first pastor.
Today Spencer Baptist consists of a sanctuary, junior-intermediate building which includes the church offices, chapel, and Family Life Center, an education building, and a fellowship hall. Spencer has had many full-time staff members in addition to the 11 pastors including present pastor, Rev. Billy E. Vaughn.
