Pieces from over 50 local artists will be on display this week during the 7th annual Celebration of the Arts hosted by the Rutherford County Visual Artists Guild.

The event begins today at The Foundation Performing Arts Center at Isothermal Community College and runs through Sunday. The display will be open from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. today through Saturday and 1-4 p.m. on Sunday.

“This event gives us an opportunity to reach many people in the community and show them the wonderful, diverse work being created here,” said artist Nancy Winker, chair of the event committee. “This gives us a venue to showcase work by area artists.”

The show features two-dimensional and three-dimensional pieces from artists in Rutherford, Polk, McDowell and Cleveland counties. Paintings, metalwork, pottery, woodwork, sculpture, textiles, jewelry and children’s art from the guild’s summer programs are on display.

“I love being able to see the variety and talent that is in the community,” Jimi Moore, guild president said. “It’s impressive to me and amazing that everyone brings in something different.”

Awards will be presented in both two-dimensional and three-dimensional categories as well as for Best in Show. The judge is Mark Packer of The University of South Carolina Upstate. There will also be awards for Artists’ Choice and People’s Choice.

Although the showcase is free to the public, it serves as a fundraiser for the guild. Those that attend can make bids on several items in the silent auction for themed baskets and visit the gift shop to purchase a variety of hand-crafted items for $35 and under.

“Fundraising efforts at the celebration support the guild’s ongoing programming and provide a scholarship for a Rutherford County senior planning on pursuing an education in art,” Moore said. “We are very appreciative of the sponsors and patrons of the arts who have generously participated in this event.”
