Children who attended the summer reading program at one of the Rutherford County libraries on Tuesday were treated to a different kind of musical performance.

Jim Cruise aka "Spoon Man" brought his musical talents of playing the spoons to Rutherford County.

"I had seen him perform several times and I decided it would be great for us to bring him here," said Children's Librarian Jeannie Smith.

Cruise is a published author from Michigan who offers an interactive comedy program for all ages. He has been playing the spoons professionally for over 20 years and his book "Spoon Boy" tells the story about how he got started.

Cruise performed at Haynes Branch Library, Rutherford County Library and Mountains Branch Library on Tuesday. Along with the laughs, Cruise also included a message that he hopes will stick with his audiences.

"It's a little bit of a ministry. I share the three secrets of success with the kids. You want to educate the kids and share with them the importance of saying no to drugs, the importance of reading and also listening to their parents," Cruise said. "Even though I just briefly touch on it, kids remember it. It's important they hear it from many different sources. You never know what's going to stick with a kid their whole life."

Cruise said that the summer months are the busiest time for him and that his favorite part about performing for children is seeing the smiles.

"You can't put a price on a smile," Cruise said.

The "Spoon Man" is just one of the many summer reading programs that the Rutherford County libraries are offering. Upcoming programs include a storyteller, a snakeman and Emmy Award winning musicians.

"We have been setting attendance records like crazy this summer, we are so pleased with the turnout," Smith said.
