SMCC to host disc golf tournament

South Mountain Christian Camp (SMCC) will host its 2nd Annual Dale Sollars Autumn Classic disc golf tournament on Saturday.

The tournament begins at 10 a.m. at the camp and is sponsored by PPG Industries in Shelby.

“This is our course championship tournament. We have a lot of regulars that come out and play our course on a pretty consistent basis and this is a chance for all of them to compete against each other,” Steve Collins, executive director of SMCC said.

The tournament is named for Dale Sollars, who designed the course at SMCC. The camp chose to name the tournament after him because of the volunteer hours he put in to get the course ready. Sollars has also designed many other courses around the county.

“We knew when we started putting the course in that we would want to host some tournaments. It’s a chance to connect with the people who are playing on the course,” Collins said. “We want to interact with people who are faithful players on our course and make our course known to others, who might otherwise not know about it.”

The tournament is open to anyone and top prizes will be awarded in a women’s and a men’s division. It will consist of two 18-hole rounds of golf with a lunch in between. Each player will receive a special pack with a min-disc, a towel and a custom disc for the tournament from PPG.

“The winners won’t get cash. They will get merchandise certificates for a certain amount of money. They can use that certificate to buy disc golf gear we will have for sale,” Collins said. “We have a plaque in the camp office here and whoever has the best score of the day gets their name engraved on the plaque. It stays in the office all year long, so they can come in and see it when they come to play.”

Players will also be eligible to win door prizes throughout the day.

“We always want the facilities here to be used. We don’t want the camp to sit empty. We have all of these programs that we do so that people can use the facilities and this is just one more way that we can make the camp available for people to be able to enjoy the outdoors,” Collins said.

Anyone interested in competing in the tournament can pre-register online for $20 at www.southmountainchristiancamp.org. The cost is $25 to register at the camp the day of the tournament. For more information call 828-245-3322. Check-in begins at 8:45 a.m. on tournament day.
