Celebrating springtime at MayFestival
Members of the community as well as visitors to Rutherford County will have the opportunity to enjoy local foods, unique arts and crafts, live music and entertainment and several family friendly activities outdoors in downtown Rutherfordton this weekend.
Rutherford Town Revitalization (RTR), in coordination with the Town of Rutherfordton and numerous sponsors and volunteers, will hold the 42nd Annual MayFestival on Main Street on Saturday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
"We are exited about MayFestival and we've expanded the event since last year," said Cindy Adair, events coordinator of RTR.
Prior to the all-day street festival's official activities, the morning will kick off with the 2014 Gears & Gables cycling event at 8 a.m., sponsored by Moose Vending. The ride features 30-mile, 60-mile and 100-mile routes through the hills of Rutherfordton.
Interested cyclists can still register at http://rutherfordhousingpartnership.com/gears_and_gables. Registration is $30 and all proceeds from the ride benefit Rutherford Housing Partnership and its mission to provide low-income homeowners with urgent repairs imminent to life or safety.
Following the start of the cycling event is the Color Blast 5K and Fun Run, a high-energy event, sponsored by Rutherford Women's League, where participants are covered in colorful dust.
Runners and walkers of all ages and fitness levels can register at http://rutherfordoutdoor.org/outdoor-activities/raceseries.races. Entry fees for the 5K are $25 for adults and $15 for students. On the day of the race it will increase to $30. The fun run for children begins after the 5K and costs $5 for pre-registrants and $7 on race day.
This year the Rutherford Women's League has chosen Abounding Grace Ministry in Rutherfordton to receive the proceeds of the Color Blast 5K and Fun Run.
Official MayFestival activities begin at 9 a.m. and will feature more than 100 vendors offering festival-goers a large spectrum of local arts and crafts, comfort foods and specialty items.
"We do have a lot of returning vendors, but we also have some new booth spaces this year," Adair said. "We have some new artists that are going to have their items on display and the R-S Central High School art classes are going to have hand-painted items for sale."
People attending the festival will also be treated to live music by the Phil Ruff Band, Project X and Twist of Fate. Other events include a performance by the Lake Lure Shag Club; a Scout Show and Pinewood Derby Race hosted by local Boy Scouts; arts and crafts demonstrations by the Rutherford County Visual Artists Guild; a pottery sale at the Visual Arts Center; and inflatables, rock climbing and other games for kids of all ages.
In conjunction with this year's MayFestival, Gregory's Original Restaurant will hold its first-ever car show at 161 Park Lane Drive in Rutherfordton. Registration is $15 and runs 9 a.m.-noon, with voting from 12:30-2:30 p.m. and an awards presentation at 3:30 p.m. More than 50 awards will be presented including "Best in Show" and "People's Choice."

"There is a lot going on and I'm excited. Adding activities this year is going to make it a more exciting day for everyone," Adair said. "Everybody is going to be ready for a fun day after the rain moves out this week."
